说

shuō v.

To utter words with the mouth to convey meaning. To speak, say, tell, explain, chat, or scold; to mean or refer to.

Uttering words, expressing thoughts, stating facts aloud.

Look at the left radical 讠(speech). 说 gives voice to thoughts, statements, and dialogue. Whether speaking a language (说中文), reporting what someone said (她说不知道), or talking to a friend (对朋友说), it is your spoken mouth at work.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 对他说 (duì tā shuō) — say to him
  • 说中文 (shuō zhōngwén) — speak Chinese
  • 怎么说 (zěnme shuō) — how to say
  • 说话 (shuōhuà) — talk, chat, speak words
  • 说了什么 (shuō le shénme) — what did (they) say
  • 说向他 / 说给他 对他说

The target person must come BEFORE the verb using the bridge word 对: 对 [someone] 说.

  • 他在说一句话 (for 'he is talking') 他在说话

When there is no specific quote or message to state, use the natural verb-object pair 说话.

Why is 'talk to him' translated as 对他说 instead of 说他?

English attaches 'to him' after the verb; Chinese faces the person first with 对: 对 [someone] 说.

说 followed directly by a person (说他) means 'to criticize or scold him'! To simply state words to someone, Chinese insists on the bridge word 对 (facing): 对 + Person + 说 + "Content". Saying 说向他 or 说和他 is a classic English-minded error. Always face the person first: 对老师说, 对朋友说.
MeaningNatural ChineseDangerous Trap
Say to the teacher对老师说说老师 (Means scolding the teacher!)
Say to him对他说说向他 / 说他
Speak to friends对朋友说跟朋友说 (Also natural in casual speech)

When should you use 说, 说话, or 告诉?

说 + Quote/Language; 说话 = physical chatting (no object); 告诉 + Person + Information.

These three verbs cover different conversational roles: 1. 说 introduces the actual words or language: 说中文, 说“你好”. 2. 说话 is a split verb meaning the broad activity of chatting or making noise: 别说话! (Stop talking!). It cannot take another noun after it. 3. 告诉 directly informs a recipient: 告诉我 (tell me), 告诉老师 (inform the teacher).
VerbSentence FormulaNatural ExampleMeaning
说说 + Language / Content他说中文。He speaks Chinese.
说话Subject + 说话 (No object)他们正在说话。They are currently chatting.
告诉告诉 + Person + Fact他告诉我明天有课。He told me there is class tomorrow.

How do you ask 'How do you say this in Chinese?'

Use the formula: 这个用中文怎么说? (This, using Chinese, how to say?)

This is one of the most useful survival sentences in the entire language. You state the topic first (这个), then add the tool (用中文, using Chinese), followed by the question phrase (怎么说, how to say). You can also use it for telling time: 怎么说时间? (How do you state the time?).
