Frequently Asked Questions (HSK 3)

Essential insights for native English learners

Is HSK 3 enough to work or study in China?
HSK 3 provides solid conversational and practical fluency for daily living and routine office tasks. For university degree programs taught in Chinese, institutions typically require HSK 4 or 5. However, HSK 3 is an ideal stepping stone for professional internships and bilingual work environments.
How does HSK 3 in HSK 3.0 compare to HSK 3 in HSK 2.0?
Old HSK 3 only required 600 words. The new HSK 3.0 Level 3 requires 2,245 words and 900 characters (nearly comparable to old HSK 4/5). Passing new HSK 3 gives you far greater genuine reading competence.
