了

le part.

To finish or bring something to an end. Marks completed actions, state changes, or a playful exclamation (了/啦).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 吃了 (chī le) — ate / have eaten
  • 好了 (hǎo le) — done / all right now
  • 走了 (zǒu le) — left / is leaving now
  • 下雨了 (xià yǔ le) — it is raining now
  • 我吃了饭 (wǒ chī le fàn) — I ate / I have eaten
  • 我每天吃了早饭 我每天吃早饭

了 shows one finished event or a change, not a repeated daily habit.

  • 我没吃了饭 我没吃饭

没 already means not done, so adding 了 sounds wrong to native ears.

  • 我吃了饭在餐厅 我在餐厅吃了饭

The location phrase usually comes before the verb phrase in Chinese.

  • 我吃了饭昨天 我昨天吃了饭

Time words usually go before the verb, not after the whole sentence.

Does 了 actually mean past tense?

No. 了 marks a finished action or a new situation, not past time.

English puts every past event in past tense, so learners slap 了 on every old action. Chinese cares about whether the action is finished, not whether the clock says yesterday. That is why 我昨天吃饭了 sounds natural, but 我每天吃了早饭 does not.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Finished action我吃了饭我吃饭 (if you mean 'I ate')
New situation下雨了下雨 (as 'it started raining')
Daily routine我每天吃早饭我每天吃了早饭

What does 他来了 actually mean?

It usually means 'He is here now,' not just 'He came.'

The 了 at the end announces a change: he was not here, now he is. If you just want to say he came yesterday, add the time word: 他昨天来了. Context decides whether the focus is arrival or current state.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
He is here now他来了他来 (as an announcement)
He came yesterday他昨天来了他来了昨天
It started raining下雨了下雨 (as 'it started raining')

What is the difference between 我吃了饭 and 我吃饭了?

吃了饭 stresses the meal is done; 吃饭了 often announces a new situation.

Put 了 after the verb to finish that action, or at the end to change the scene. 我吃了饭就去 means after eating, I will go; 我吃饭了 can mean I'm eating now. Both are correct, but they point at different moments.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
After eating, then go我吃了饭就去我吃饭了就去 (if you mean after the meal)
Announcing now eating我吃饭了我吃了饭 (if you mean right now)
Time to eat吃饭了!吃了饭! (as a call to eat)

Can I say 我没吃了饭?

No. Say 我没吃饭, because 没 already handles the not-done idea.

Chinese does not usually put 没 and 了 together in a simple negative. Use 我没吃饭 for 'I didn't eat' or 'I haven't eaten.' Use 我不吃了 if you mean you are stopping eating now.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
I didn't eat我没吃饭我没吃了饭
I haven't eaten yet我还没吃饭我还没吃了饭
I'm stopping eating now我不吃了我没吃了饭
I don't eat it我不吃我不吃了 (if you mean a habit)

Can I say 我每天吃了早饭?

No. Routines skip 了 unless you mean one finished meal.

了 marks a finished event or a change, not a repeated habit. So 我每天吃早饭 is correct for everyday breakfast. If today's breakfast is done, say 我今天吃了早饭.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Daily routine我每天吃早饭我每天吃了早饭
One finished meal我今天吃了早饭我今天吃早饭 (if the meal is done)
Repeated past routine我去年每天吃早饭我去年每天吃了早饭
