了 le, liǎo

HSK 1 Writing L2

A swaddled baby wrapped tight with arms bound, marking completion. To finish, understand, or indicate a completed action or changed state. A child (子) with its arms tucked away—wrapped up and done.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我吃了 (wǒ chī le) — I've eaten / I'm done eating
  • 他来了 (tā lái le) — He's here / he's arrived
  • 下雨了 (xià yǔ le) — It's raining now
  • 太好了 (tài hǎo le) — That's great!
  • 不要了 (bú yào le) — I don't want it anymore
  • 我去了 (wǒ qù le) — I went
  • 他每天来了 他每天来。

了 marks one finished event or a change of state. A daily habit is neither finished nor new, so 了 has no job here.

  • 我看书了三年 我看了三年书。

了 doesn't mean 'for a length of time.' It sits right after the verb and marks completion, not a stopwatch.

If 了 isn't past tense, why does 我吃了 sound like 'I ate'?

了 marks done-ness or a fresh situation, not past time.

Chinese verbs never change shape for past or future. 了 simply says an action hit its endpoint. 我吃 means 'I eat' or 'I'm eating.' 我吃了 means 'I've eaten, so I'm done.' You can even say 明天吃了饭再说, which means 'let's talk after we've eaten tomorrow.' That sentence points at tomorrow, and 了 still fits perfectly. So stop translating 了 as 'past tense' and start hearing it as 'finished, done, that box is ticked.'
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Finished action我吃了饭。我了吃饭。
Future event明天就下雨了。明天就下雨。
Ongoing action我在吃饭。我吃了饭。 (for 'I am eating')

Why does 下雨了 mean 'it's raining now' instead of 'it rained'?

了 at the end announces a change: things are different from a second ago.

了 parked at the end of a sentence reports a new situation, not a past event. 下雨了 means rain just started falling. 他来了 means he has arrived and is standing here now. 太好了 means your mood just jumped. It's the same 了 as the completion one, just doing its job at the end of the sentence and pointing at a changed world.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
New situation下雨了!下雨。 (as an announcement)
Arrival他来了。他来。 (as an announcement)
Changed mind我不要了。我不要。 (meaning 'not anymore')

Should I say 我去过中国 or 我去了中国?

过 is 'been there, done that.' 了 is 'it's done, here's the update.'

过 talks about life experience with no specific date attached to it. 了 talks about finishing something or a change in the current situation. 我去过中国 means 'I have been to China at some point in my life.' 我去了中国 means 'I went to China,' reporting a finished trip. If you're listing countries you've visited, reach for 过 every time.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Life experience我去过中国。我去了过中国。
A dated trip他昨天去了中国。他昨天去过中国。
Never have我没去过中国。我没去了中国。

Why is 了解 pronounced 'liǎojiě' and not 'lejiě'?

了 has two jobs: the light word 'le' and the full word 'liǎo.'

Read as liǎo, 了 is a real verb meaning 'to finish' or 'to be able to.' 了解 means 'to understand.' 受不了 means 'can't stand it.' 了不起 means 'amazing.' The le version is the grammar word you drop after verbs, weighing almost nothing. Same character, two completely different lives, and the pinyin tells you which one you're looking at.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Grammar word我吃了。 (le)我吃 liǎo。
Real verb我了解。 (liǎo)我了 le 解。
Fixed phrase受不了。 (liǎo)受不 le。

Why can't I say 我没吃了饭 to mean 'I didn't eat'?

没 already means 'it didn't happen,' so it kicks 了 out of the sentence.

没 and 了 are enemies and never share a verb. 没 says an action never happened; 了 says it did happen or just changed. So you say 我没吃饭, never 我没吃了饭. The same logic kills 了 in 我还没吃饭, where 'not yet' is already doing the work. Pick a side: 了 for what happened, 没 for what didn't.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Didn't happen我没吃饭。我没吃了饭。
Happened我吃了饭。我没吃饭了。
Not yet我还没吃饭。我还没吃了饭。
