也 yě

HSK 1 Writing L2

A bronze vessel or basin with a curved spout. Also, too, as well; adds another item or parallel statement. Wide-mouthed vessel with a curved tail — an extra hook added on.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我也是 (wǒ yě shì) — Me too / I am also
  • 也是 (yě shì) — is also / is likewise
  • 也去 (yě qù) — also go / go too
  • 也喜欢 (yě xǐ huan) — also like / like too
  • 也没有 (yě méi yǒu) — also don't have / neither do I have
  • 也不 (yě bù) — also not / not either
  • 也可以 (yě kě yǐ) — also can / is also okay
  • 也好 (yě hǎo) — also fine / that works too
  • 我喜欢也 我也喜欢

也 goes before the verb, not at the end like English 'too'.

  • 我是也学生 我也是学生

也 comes before 是, not after it.

  • 我都去 我也去

都 means all/both. For one person meaning 'me too', use 也.

  • 他不去也 他也不去

Negative sentences still put 也 before 不.

Why does 我也是 work but 我是也 sound completely broken?

也 is a glue word that sits right before the verb, never after it.

English lets 'also' float around: 'I also am a student' and 'I am also a student' both work. Chinese 也 is not that flexible. It sticks to the front of the verb or adjective. So you say 我也是学生, not 我是也学生. The same rule gives you 我也去, not 我去也. Think of 也 as a small flag planted right before the action word.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Placement我也是学生我是也学生
With 去我也去我去也
With 喜欢我也喜欢我喜欢也

Can I use 都 to mean 'me too'?

也 means 'too/also'; 都 means 'all/both'. They are not twins.

Use 也 when one person matches another person or situation. Use 都 when every person in a group does the same thing. 'I'm going too' is 我也去. 'We're all going' is 我们都去. If you put 都 with one person and mean 'me too', it sounds wrong. Keep the picture simple: 也 points at matching, 都 points at a whole group.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
One person我也去 (I'm going too)我都去 (I'm all going?)
Many people我们都去 (We're all going)我们也去 (We're also going, not all)
Meaning check也 = matching都 = all/both

How do I say 'I don't have money either' without sounding like a robot?

Put 也 before the negative verb: 我也没有钱. Not at the end.

English puts 'either' at the end: 'I don't have money either.' Chinese puts 也 before the negative verb. The pattern is subject + 也 + 不/没 + verb + object. So 'I don't have money either' is 我也没有钱. 'He isn't going either' is 他也不去. Do not copy English and dump 也 at the tail.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Negative 有我也没有钱我没有钱也
Negative 不他也不去他不去也
Patternsubject + 也 + 不/没 + verb也 at the end
