们 men

HSK 1 Writing L2

们 is 人 (person) wearing a 门 (door) for sound.

Pressing 人 down turns it into the 亻shape, and 门 rides along on the right. The person bit flags that 们 deals with people, and 门 just donates the sound 'men'. That people-clue is exactly why 们 only ever tags humans.

亻(人) person — signals 们 is people-only 门 door — lends the sound 'men'

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我们 (wǒmen) — we / us
  • 你们 (nǐmen) — you all
  • 他们 (tāmen) — they / them
  • 她们 (tāmen) — they (all female)
  • 人们 (rénmen) — people in general
  • 朋友们 (péngyoumen) — friends (as a group)
  • 老师们 (lǎoshīmen) — teachers (as a group)
  • 同学们 (tóngxuémen) — classmates (as a group)
  • 三个学生们 三个学生

A number already shows it's more than one. Adding 们 is like saying 'three students-es'.

  • 很多人们 很多人

很多 is already a quantity, so piling on 们 doubles the plural for no reason.

  • 书们 一些书

们 never touches objects. Just leave the noun bare or add 一些.

Can you say 三个学生们 to mean 'three students'?

No. 们 and exact numbers never mix.

们 tags a group as a whole, not a set you're counting. Once you write 三个学生, the number already says 'more than one', so 们 becomes dead weight. Native ears hear 三个学生们 as 'three students-es' and it lands wrong. Say 学生们 for the group, or 三个学生 when you count. The same rule kills 很多人们; just say 很多人.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Count them三个学生三个学生们
Whole group学生们三个学生们
Many people很多人很多人们

Can you slap 们 onto objects like 书们 or 桌子们?

No. 们 only attaches to people.

们 is a people-only tag. You say 老师们, 同学们, 朋友们, but never 书们 or 桌子们. For objects, Chinese just leaves the noun alone or adds 一些 or 很多. So 'some books' is 一些书, never 书们. Animals usually skip 们 too; 猫们 sounds poetic at best.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
People老师们书们
Objects一些书书们
Animals一些猫猫们 (rare)

For a group of women, do you write 他们 or 她们?

她们 for all-female; 他们 covers everything else.

In writing, 她们 means the whole group is female. Drop in even one man and it flips back to 他们. In casual speech plenty of people just say 他们 for everyone. So treat 他们 as the default 'they', and 她们 as the marked female-only version.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
All-female group她们他们 (in careful writing)
Mixed group他们她们
All-male group他们她们

Is 您们 a real word for politely addressing a group?

Mostly no. Use 大家, 各位, or plain 你们.

您 is a one-person polite 'you', and it traditionally has no 们 form. To address a group politely, Chinese reaches for 大家, 各位, or simple 你们. You'll spot 您们 in texts and emails now and then, but it still reads as awkward to careful ears.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
One person, polite您您们
Group, polite大家 / 各位您们
Group, casual你们您们

What's the difference between 我们 and 咱们?

咱们 includes the person you're talking to; 我们 might not.

咱们 pulls the listener in: 'you and me, together'. 我们 can mean that, but it can also shut the listener out, like 'us, not you'. Northerners use 咱们 constantly in speech; southerners and most writing stick with 我们. If you're rallying a group you're part of, 咱们 sounds warmer and more inclusive.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Including listener咱们走吧我们走吧 (can exclude)
Excluding listener我们公司咱们公司 (odd)
Formal writing我们咱们
