有 yǒu

HSK 1 Writing L2

有 shows a hand grabbing a chunk of meat — grab it, and you've got it.

The top is an old hand shape reaching down. The bottom is a slice of meat, written with the same 月 shape that hides inside lots of food characters. A hand closing on meat meant 'to hold' — and holding something is exactly what 有 means today: to have, or for something to exist.

又 (hand) a hand reaching down 月 (meat) a piece of meat

Common Usage & Traps

  • 有钱 (yǒu qián) — to have money; rich
  • 有人 (yǒu rén) — there are people; someone is there
  • 有时间 (yǒu shíjiān) — to have time
  • 没有 (méiyǒu) — to not have; there is not
  • 有朋友 (yǒu péngyou) — to have friends
  • 有意思 (yǒu yìsi) — interesting
  • 我是有 我有

English speakers bolt 是 onto 有 because 'am having' feels like it needs a linking verb. Chinese never stacks the two. Just say 我有.

  • 我有在家 我在家

Learners copy the English 'have been' and sprinkle in a spare 有. Location only needs 在 — 有 is for having and existing, not for where you are.

Why can't I say 我是有 to mean 'I have'?

有 and 是 never team up — 是 means 'is', 有 means 'have'.

是 points at one thing and says it's another. 有 means you hold something, or something exists. Stack them and both jobs break — so 'I have a car' is 我有一辆车, never 我是有一辆车.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Having something我有一辆车。我是有一辆车。
Something exists桌子上有一本书。桌子上是有一本书。
Answering 有吗有。是。

What's the difference between 桌子上有一本书 and 书在桌子上?

有 introduces something on a spot; 在 says where a known thing is.

有 answers 'what's there?' — 桌子上有一本书 means there's a book on the table. 在 answers 'where is it?' — 书在桌子上 means the book is on the table. Use 有 for new stuff, 在 for known stuff.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Something new on a spot桌子上有一本书。书有在桌子上。
Where a known thing is书在桌子上。书上有在桌子。
Asking what's there桌子上有什么?桌子上在什么?

Why is the opposite of 有 always 没有 and never 不有?

有 always says no with 没, never 不 — the opposite is 没有, full stop.

Most verbs say no with 不: 不去, 不是, 不知道. 有 is the rebel — Mandarin only says 没有 for 'don't have' or 'there isn't'. 不有 never comes out of a native mouth.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Don't have我没有钱。我不有钱。
No friends他没有朋友。他不有朋友。
Yes-no question你有没有时间?你不有时间?

Should I ask 你有没有时间 or 你有时间吗?

Both are fine — just never stack 吗 onto 有没有.

有没有...? is the everyday way to ask 'do you have...?' in speech. 有...吗? works too and sounds a touch more neutral. But 有没有...吗? asks the question twice — pick one pattern.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Everyday spoken你有没有时间?你有没有时间吗?
Also fine你有时间吗?你有时间有没有?
Answer有 / 没有是 / 不是
