一 yī

HSK 1 Writing L2

一 is one horizontal line — one stroke, one thing.

There's no hidden picture here. 一 is a single stroke that simply stands for the number one. That's why it's the first character every kid learns, and why its tone rules quietly trip up adults for months.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 一个 (yí ge) — one (of something), a
  • 一起 (yìqǐ) — together
  • 一点 (yìdiǎn) — a little bit
  • 第一 (dì yī) — first
  • 一天 (yì tiān) — one day
  • 一个 (said as yī ge) yí ge

个 is 4th tone, so 一 flips up to 2nd tone. Saying yī ge marks you as a textbook robot instantly.

  • 一起 (said as yīqǐ) yìqǐ

起 is 3rd tone, so 一 drops to 4th tone. yīqǐ sounds stiff and wrong to every native ear.

  • 一人 (for 'one person') 一个人

Chinese nouns need a measure word in front of them. Bare 一人 lives in old novels and kung-fu dialogue, not daily speech.

Why does 一 sound like yī, yí, and yì in different words?

一 steals the tone of whatever comes next — that's why it keeps changing.

Say 一 before a 4th-tone word like 个, and it flips up to 2nd tone: yí ge. Before a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd tone word, it drops down to 4th tone: yì tiān, yìqǐ. Standing alone or finishing a count, it snaps back to its real first tone: yī, èr, sān. Native speakers never think about this — it just falls out of their mouths automatically.
ContextNaturalAvoid
Before 4th tone (个, 次)yí ge / yí cìyī ge / yī cì
Before 1st–3rd tone (天, 起)yì tiān / yìqǐyī tiān / yīqǐ
Counting or standing aloneyī, èr, sānyí, èr, sān

In 第一 and 星期一, why does 一 stay yī instead of changing to yí or yì?

In ordinals like 第一 and 星期一, 一 is locked at 1st tone and never changes.

一 only shifts tone when it's busy counting things — 'one of something.' In 第一 or 星期一, it's just naming a spot in a list, so nothing is being counted. That means the tone stays put at yī. You say dì yī and xīngqī yī, never dì yí or xīngqī yí.
PhraseNaturalAvoid
Firstdì yīdì yí
Mondayxīngqī yīxīngqī yí
Januaryyī yuèyí yuè

English lets you say 'a' or 'one' by itself. Can I just throw 一 in front of any noun?

Nope — Chinese nouns need a measure word, so 'a coffee' is 一杯咖啡, not 一咖啡.

English 'a' and 'one' both map onto 一, but Chinese nouns can't be counted bare. Between 一 and the noun you need a measure word — 个, 杯, 本, 只. So 'a person' is 一个人, 'a coffee' is 一杯咖啡, 'a book' is 一本书. Drop the measure word and 一人 sounds like ancient kung-fu dialogue, not daily talk. Even plain narration leans on it: “晚上,大中去公司前边的一个小饭店吃饭。” (In the evening, Dazhong goes to a small restaurant in front of the company to eat.) ── 《五块钱》
MeaningNaturalAvoid
A person一个人一人
A coffee一杯咖啡一咖啡
A book一本书一书
