小 xiǎo

HSK 1 Writing L2

小 is a tiny picture of three little specks — the original idea of 'small'.

Imagine three grains of sand floating in the air. That's the whole character: a few tiny marks and nothing big. Over the centuries the marks grew a hook and a middle stroke, but the meaning never moved — small stuff.

小 three tiny specks (the whole character)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 小 (xiǎo) — small, little
  • 小狗 (xiǎogǒu) — puppy, little dog
  • 小猫 (xiǎomāo) — kitten, little cat
  • 小心 (xiǎoxīn) — be careful

小 is about overall size, not height. For a short person, use 矮 or 个子小.

小 never describes an amount of time. For 'not much time', use 少 or 一点.

少 is about number, not size. A small house is 小房子, not 少房子.

Can I say 人很小 to mean 'there are few people'?

No. 小 is about size, 少 is about amount. Few people is 人很少.

小 measures how big something is. 少 measures how many or how much. A small dog is 小狗, but few people is 人很少. Say 人很小 and natives picture tiny little humans standing around. Same with money: 钱很少 means not much cash, while 钱很小 is nonsense unless the coins themselves are tiny.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Small in size
Few in number

If someone is short, can I describe them with 他很小?

他很小 sounds like 'he's young', not short. For height, use 矮.

When 小 lands on a person, native ears hear age, not height. 他还小 means he's still young, which is fine for a kid. For a short grown-up, say 他很矮 or 他个子小. Saying 他很小 about your adult friend just sounds like you think he's a child.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Short height
Small object

Why do coworkers call me 小王?

It's a warm nickname, not a size joke. 小 + surname means the younger one.

Chinese speakers put 小 before a surname for someone younger: 小王, 小李, 小张. It's casual and friendly, used by older colleagues, classmates, or friends. It says nothing about your body. Just don't run it backwards: calling your boss 小王 is rude, so use 王经理 or 王老师 instead.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Small Wang (literal English)
Your boss or elder
Older coworker老王, 老张老王 (to a client)
