人 rén

HSK 1 Writing L2

人 is a stick figure of a person mid-stride: two strokes meeting at the top, splitting into legs at the bottom.

Two strokes. One leans left, one leans right. They touch at the top and open at the bottom, like a headless body with two legs walking. That is the entire character: a human shape. No hidden parts, no secret code. Once you see the legs, you will never unsee them.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 一个人 (yí gè rén) — one person / by yourself
  • 中国人 (Zhōngguó rén) — Chinese person
  • 有人 (yǒu rén) — someone / there are people
  • 没有人 (méiyǒu rén) — no one / nobody
  • 那个人 (nàge rén) — that person
  • 几个人 (jǐ gè rén) — how many people / several people
  • 很多人 (hěn duō rén) — many people
  • 什么人 (shénme rén) — who? / what kind of person?
  • 我是人中国 我是中国人

The country or group goes before 人. Chinese says China person, not person China.

  • 三个人们 三个人

Never add 们 after a number. The number already tells the listener there is more than one.

  • 我吃饭一个人 我一个人吃饭

When 一个人 means alone, it goes before the verb. Chinese puts the alone part first.

Why is it 中国人 and not 人中国?

Chinese puts the group before 人: China person, not person China.

The country or group always comes first. 中国 plus 人 means a person from China. Flip it and native ears hear broken Chinese. This same pattern works with any place you already know at HSK 1, so 北京人 is a Beijing person and 上海人 is a Shanghai person.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Nationality中国人人中国
City person北京人人北京
Full sentence我是中国人。我是人中国。

Does 一个人 always mean 'alone'?

No. It can count one person or mean by yourself, depending on context.

If you are doing something without other people, 一个人 usually means alone. If you are just counting heads in a room, it means one person. The verb and the situation decide the meaning, not the phrase itself. When you mean by yourself, put 我一个人 before the action.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Alone我一个人吃饭。我吃饭一个人。
One person there前面有一个人。前面有个人一。
Alone at home我一个人在家。我在家一个人。

If there are three people, do I say 三个人们?

No. After a number, 人 stays 人: 三个人, not 三个人们.

Chinese never adds 们 after a number. 们 shows up in 我们 and 你们, but it does not turn counted people into plurals. Three people is 三个人. Many people is 很多人. The number already tells the listener it is more than one, so 们 would be redundant and wrong.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Counted people三个人三个人们
Many people很多人很多人们
Full sentence前面有三个人。前面有三个人们。
