你 nǐ

HSK 1 Writing L2

你 is 亻 (a person) plus 尔 (the sound nǐ). Left side gives meaning, right side gives sound.

The left half 亻 is a squeezed drawing of a person standing sideways, and it shows up in 他 and 们 too. The right half 尔 is a sound tag: it tells your mouth to say nǐ, and its own meaning is irrelevant here. So 你 is a meaning-plus-sound package, which is how most characters are built.

亻 person (standing sideways) 尔 sound hint for nǐ

Common Usage & Traps

  • 你好 (nǐ hǎo) — hello (literally 'you good')
  • 你们 (nǐ men) — you all / you guys
  • 你的 (nǐ de) — your / yours
  • 谢谢你 (xiè xie nǐ) — thank you
  • 你叫什么名字 (nǐ jiào shén me míng zi) — what's your name
  • 你们们 你们

们 already carries the plural, so 你们们 is a double plural nobody writes or says. Same pattern: 我们, 他们, 老师们. It only attaches to people, so 书们 is broken too.

  • 你书 你的书

You can't park 你 directly on a thing. Use 你的 for objects. The exception is close people and 家: 你妈妈 and 你家 sound natural without 的.

When should I use 您 instead of 你?

Use 您 with strangers, elders, and customers. Use 你 with friends, kids, and your own age.

您 is just 你 with 心 (heart) tucked underneath, and that heart is the whole point. Strangers, older people, customers, and anyone you're serving get 您. Friends, kids, and classmates get 你. Swapping them goes wrong fast. Calling your close friend 您 sounds cold or sarcastic. Calling an older stranger 你 can sound too familiar. In Beijing you'll hear 您 all day in shops and taxis. With an older stranger, 您 is the safe default until they tell you otherwise.
SituationNaturalAvoid
Your best friend你吃了吗您吃了吗 (cold or sarcastic)
A customer in your shop您要什么你要什么 (too blunt)
A small kid你几岁了您几岁了 (sounds like a joke)
An older stranger您好你好 (too familiar)

Do you say 你们 or 你们们 for 'you guys'?

你们. 们 goes on the pronoun once, and only when you mean people.

们 is the group tag, and it works the same way across pronouns. 我 becomes 我们, 你 becomes 你们, 他 becomes 他们. You never need it twice, which is why 你们们 fails. It also sticks to people, not objects, so 老师们 is fine while 书们 is not. 你们 covers two friends, a whole classroom, or your team at work. The version without 们 means exactly one person.
MeaningNaturalAvoid
You, one person你你们 (wrong for one person)
You, more than one你们你们们
We / us我们我们们
They他们他们们
A pile of books很多书书们 (only people take 们)

Do Chinese speakers always say 你, or can they drop it?

They drop it constantly. If the listener knows who you mean, cut it.

Chinese drops the subject whenever the listener already knows who you mean. A friend asks 去吗 and everyone hears 'Are you going?' That's normal, not lazy. Keep 你 when you're pointing at one specific person. 你去吧,我不去 sets up a you-versus-me contrast that vanishes without 你. Keep it too when you switch to a new person or a new topic mid-sentence. Repeat 你 in every clause and you sound like a textbook reading itself aloud.
SituationNaturalTextbook-ish
Friend might come over来吗你来吗
Deciding who goes你去吧,我不去去吧 (loses the contrast)
Greeting a neighbor吃了吗你吃了吗
Same friend mentioned twice昨天碰见一个朋友,说要去北京碰见他,他说他要去北京 (he, he, he)

Do Chinese people actually say 你好吗?

Rarely. It smells like a phrasebook. Real people ask 最近怎么样 or 你还好吗.

你好吗 isn't broken, it just sounds like a phrasebook talking. For 'how have you been', real people say 最近怎么样. 你还好吗 works when someone's been sick or stressed. 吃了吗 is the classic street greeting in the north. Save 你好吗 for checking on someone who's actually had a rough time. Using it on a stranger also reads as oddly intimate, since it asks about their life.
SituationNaturalAvoid
Friend you haven't seen in months最近怎么样你好吗 (stiff)
Someone was sick last week你还好吗你好吗 (flat)
Meeting someone new你好你好吗 (over-familiar)
Passing a coworker in the morning早 / 吃了吗你好吗 (robot mode)
