那 nà

HSK 1 Writing L2

A specific place name from an ancient western region. That, those, there, or in that case. City/land (阝) beside a knife-like pointed marker (left side) points to that place.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 那个 (nà ge) — that one (thing/person)
  • 那天 (nà tiān) — that day / the other day
  • 那里 (nà lǐ) — there / that place
  • 那时候 (nà shí hou) — at that time / back then
  • 那么 (nà me) — so / that much / in that case
  • 那些 (nà xiē) — those (plural)
  • 你去那里? 你去哪里?

那里 means 'there'; 哪里 means 'where'. The mouth 口 in 哪 reminds you it is a question.

  • 那个... as every 'um' Use 那个 sparingly in casual talk; formal speech needs a clean pause.

Natives do say it, but constant 那个 sounds unprepared.

  • 那我走了 = 'that I left' 那我走了 = 'Then I'm off'

At the front of a sentence, 那 often means 'then' or 'in that case'.

哪 (nǎ) vs 那 (nà): How to never confuse 'where' and 'that'?

哪 has 口: ask with mouth. 那: point at 'that'.

哪 has a mouth radical 口 on the left because you open your mouth to ask a question ('where? / which?'). 那 has no mouth because you simply point at 'that'. So 哪里 means 'where?' while 那里 means 'there'. 哪个 means 'which one?' while 那个 means 'that one'. If you remember the mouth, the tone difference nǎ vs nà stops being scary.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Asking 'where?'你去哪里? (Nǐ qù nǎlǐ?)你去那里? (Nǐ qù nàlǐ?) — sounds like 'You're going there?'
Pointing 'that one'我要那个。 (Wǒ yào nàge.)我要哪个。 (Wǒ yào nǎge.) — sounds like 'Which one do I want?'

Why does 那我走了 mean 'then I'm off' instead of 'that I'm off'?

Sentence-start 那 often means 'then' or 'so', not 'that'.

When 那 sits at the front of a sentence, it often means 'then' or 'in that case'. It is not pointing at a thing like 那个 does. So 那好吧 means 'Okay then', and 那我走了 means 'Then I'm off'. If you translate every 那 as 'that', these lines sound broken.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Reacting to a plan那好吧。 (Nà hǎo ba.) = Okay then.那个好吧。 (Nàge hǎo ba.) — sounds like 'That one is okay.'
Leaving那我走了。 (Nà wǒ zǒu le.) = Then I'm off.那是我走了。 (Nà shì wǒ zǒu le.) — broken, sounds like 'That is I left.'
Changing topic那你说呢? (Nà nǐ shuō ne?) = Then what do you say?那个你说呢? (Nàge nǐ shuō ne?) — sounds like 'That one, what do you say?'

Can you use 那个 like 'um' when you're thinking?

Yes in casual speech, but it sounds sloppy in formal settings.

Natives often say 那个...那个... when they pause to think. It works like English 'um' or 'uh' in casual talk. But in class, interviews, or writing, it sounds messy and unprepared. Use a clean pause, or just start your sentence, instead of stacking 那个.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Casual pause那个...我不知道。 (Nàge... wǒ bù zhīdào.)那个那个那个... (sounds stuck)
Formal answer我不知道。 (Wǒ bù zhīdào.)那个...我不知道。 (sounds messy in class)
