和 hé, huó, hè

HSK 1 Writing L2

To respond harmoniously, blend tones, or sing in accord.

Peace, harmony, mildness; “with/and”; to mix dough (huó); to echo in reply (hè). Grain (禾) beside a mouth (口): full stomach and calm words create peace.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我和你 (wǒ hé nǐ) — you and I
  • 爸爸和妈妈 (bàba hé māma) — dad and mom
  • 老师和学生 (lǎoshī hé xuésheng) — teacher and student
  • 猫和狗 (māo hé gǒu) — cat and dog
  • 我和朋友 (wǒ hé péngyou) — me and my friend
  • 我和他喝茶 (wǒ hé tā hē chá) — I drink tea with him
  • 我喝茶和他 我和他喝茶

和 links two people before the verb.

  • 我和他高兴 我和他都很高兴

For 'both are happy', add 都.

  • 我去和他 我和他去

    'With' goes before the verb.

  • 我和去 我也去

和 joins nouns; 也 adds 'also' before the verb.

Is 和 the only way to say 'and' between people?

No. 跟 is often more natural than 和 for people in everyday speech.

和 is the safe textbook connector, and it works in most HSK 1 sentences. 跟 is the everyday choice for 'with' or 'and' between people in northern speech. 我跟朋友去吃饭 sounds natural; 我和朋友去吃饭 is also fine. Pick 和 in tests, but expect 跟 from locals.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Everyday speech我跟朋友去吃饭我与朋友去吃饭 (too formal)
Textbook default我和朋友去吃饭我朋友去吃饭和

Do you need 都 when 和 joins two subjects?

Only when you mean 'both.' Without 都, 和 often means 'with' instead.

If you say 我和他都很高兴, the 都 makes it clearly 'both of us are happy.' 我和他高兴 is awkward because two separate people plus an adjective wants 都. With verbs, 我和他去 usually means 'I go with him.' 我和他都去 means 'both of us go.' So 都 is not random; it changes the meaning from 'with' to 'both.'
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Both subjects我和他都很高兴我和他高兴 (odd)
Both going我和他都去我和他去 (usually 'I go with him')
Both not going我和他都不去我和他不去 (usually 'I don't go with him')

Can 和 mean 'with' like in English 'I went with him'?

Yes, but 和 goes before the verb: 我和他去, not 我去和他.

English puts 'with him' after the verb. Chinese puts 和他 before the verb. 我和他去 means I go with him. 我去和他 sounds broken, like you are going to 'and' him. Same for questions: 你和谁去? not 你去和谁?
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Going together我和他去我去和他
Drinking tea我和他喝茶我喝茶和他
Question form你和谁去?你去和谁?

Can 和 and 也 both mean 'and' or 'also'?

No. 和 connects two nouns; 也 adds 'also' before a verb or adjective.

和 links items side by side: 我和你. 也 is an helper word meaning 'also' and sits before the verb: 我也去. Swapping them breaks the sentence: 我和去 is not Chinese. When both show up, 和 links the subjects and 都 or 也 handles the verb: 我和他都去.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Joining nouns我和你我也你
Adding also我也去我和去
Both ideas我和他都去我和他都也去
