大 dà, dài

HSK 1 Writing L2

大 is a person standing with arms stretched wide, showing how big something is.

Picture a stick figure facing you: a head, a body, and two arms stretched out as far as they can go. That wide-open pose is the whole character. It is one single picture, not a puzzle made of smaller pieces, so do not try to chop it into parts.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 大学 (dàxué) — university
  • 大家 (dàjiā) — everyone
  • 大人 (dàren) — adult, grown-up
  • 多大 (duō dà) — how big / how old
  • 好大 (hǎo dà) — so big
  • 我很大 我很高 / 我长大了

大 measures bulk and size, never a person's height. Say 我很大 and listeners picture a giant blob, not a tall guy.

  • 大下雨 雨很大 / 下大雨

大 cannot sit in front of a verb. Chinese says the rain itself is big (雨很大), or uses the fixed chunk 下大雨.

  • 大家好 = big family good 大家好 = hello, everyone

大家 is one fixed word meaning 'everyone'. Reading it as 'big family' will confuse you the first time a teacher opens class with it.

大 vs 太: how do you remember that extra drop in 太?

大 is a person with arms stretched wide (big). 太 adds one drop underneath that spills over: too much.

Picture a person standing with both arms stretched out as far as they can go. That pose is 大, and it simply means big or large. Now add one small drop underneath, and you get 太. That drop is the extra that spilled over the edge, so 太 always means past the line. 这个苹果很大 (this apple is big) versus 这个苹果太大了 (this apple is too big — it will not fit my bag). 太 also handles feelings that overshoot: 太好了 (great!), 太贵了 (too expensive), 太忙了 (way too busy). Whenever you see that drop, hear the word 'too'.
Dimension大太
ShapeA person with arms stretched wideThe same person plus one drop underneath
MeaningBig, large — plain sizeToo much — past the line
Example这个苹果很大。(This apple is big.)这个苹果太大了。(This apple is too big.)
Common phrases大学, 大家, 多大太好了, 太贵了, 太忙了

Your tall friend — do you say 他很大 or 他很高?

大 is for bulk and size. Height is always 高, no matter who or what you describe.

大 talks about overall size: 大房子, 大苹果, 大城市. Height is a completely different word, 高. Your friend is 他很高, the tree outside is 那棵树很高. Asking how tall someone is also uses 高: 你多高? Say 他很大 and people picture a wide blob, not a tall person. The one place 大 wins for a person is growing up: 孩子长大了 means the kid has grown, because 大 measures growth, not centimeters.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Tall person他很高。他很大。 (sounds like a blob)
Big room房间很大。房间很高。 (only true for ceilings)
Asking height你多高?你多大? (that asks age)

Why does 你多大 mean 'how old are you' when 大 means big?

Chinese counts age as growing, so 你多大 literally asks 'how big have you grown?'

Chinese pictures a person getting bigger year by year, so 你多大? is like asking 'how big are you now?' It works with friends, classmates, and anyone roughly your age. 你几岁? carries the same idea but belongs to small kids only — use it on a 40-year-old and you have just insulted them. For an older person or a formal setting, 您多大年纪? does the polite job. However you ask, the answer keeps 岁: 我二十五岁。
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Friends or peers你多大?你几岁? (treats them like a kid)
Small child你几岁?您多大年纪? (absurdly formal)
Older person or stranger您多大年纪?你几岁? (borderline rude)

English says 'heavy rain', so why do Chinese speakers say 雨很大 instead of 大下雨?

大 describes the thing, not the action, so it sits with the rain: 雨很大.

English glues 'heavy' onto the verb, but Chinese hangs 大 on the noun instead: 雨很大, 今天雨很大. The rain itself is the big thing. 下大雨 works too, because there 大雨 is a single fixed chunk, so 大 still travels with the noun. A verb can never take 大 in front of it — 大下雨 breaks instantly. The same logic covers noise: 大声说话 is how you say 'speak loudly', while 大说话 means nothing at all.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Heavy rain雨很大。大下雨。
Fixed rain phrase下大雨了。下雨大了。
Loud voice大声说话。大说话。
