有

yǒu v.

To hold something in the hand—originally a piece of meat (肉) showing possession. To have, own, or exist; there is/are; to be present or available.

Existing in space, holding resources, or possessing something.

有 acts like a treasure chest opening up. In Chinese, locations act like containers: the room holds people (房间里有人), the store holds fruit (商店里有很多水果), and your pocket holds money (我有钱).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 有钱 (yǒu qián) — have money, rich
  • 有人 (yǒu rén) — there is someone
  • 很多水果 (hěn duō shuǐguǒ) — a lot of fruit
  • 有一点儿 (yǒu yìdiǎnr) — a little bit (annoying/cold)
  • 没有 (méiyǒu) — don't have, there is no
  • 我不有时间 我没有时间

有 strictly refuses 不. The negative form is always 没有, never 不有.

  • 桌子是在有书 桌子上有书

Never cram 是 and 有 together into the same slot to mean 'there is'.

What is the difference between 桌子上有书 and 书在桌子上?

Place + 有 + Thing introduces what exists there; Thing + 在 + Place tracks location.

Both sentences talk about a table and a book, but from opposite angles. 1. Place + 有 + Thing (桌子上有书) acts like introducing what is inside a container: 'There is a book on the table.' 2. Thing + 在 + Place (书在桌子上) pinpoints where a specific object is: 'The book is on the table.' If someone asks 'Where is my book?', say 书在桌子上. If you describe what the room looks like, say 桌子上有书.
Starting FocusStructure FormulaNatural ExampleEnglish Equivalent
Focus on the spacePlace + 有 + Item商店里有很多水果。There is a lot of fruit in the store.
Focus on the objectItem + 在 + Place水果在商店里。The fruit is inside the store.

Why can you never say 我不有钱 for 'I don't have money'?

有 is the one core word that strictly rejects 不. Always say 没有.

In Chinese grammar, 不 negates intent, future actions, and descriptions (我不吃, 不好). But facts of existence or possession belong exclusively to 没. Saying 不有 sounds completely broken to a native ear, like saying 'I un-have' in English. Always pair 有 with 没: 我没有钱, 我没有时间.
SituationNatural ExpressionForbidden Trap
Having no money我没有钱。我不有钱。
Having no time今天没有时间。今天不有时间。
Asking yes/no question你有没有?你有不有?

When do you say 有一点儿 versus just 一点儿?

有一点儿 + Adjective (complaining); Verb + 一点儿 + Noun (a little quantity).

This is one of the classic HSK 1 stumbling blocks: 1. 有一点儿 goes before an adjective, usually signaling a slight negative feeling: 天气有一点儿冷 (the weather is a bit cold), 这个菜有一点儿贵 (a bit expensive). 2. 一点儿 sits after a verb to modify a noun quantity: 喝一点儿水 (drink a little water), 买一点儿水果 (buy a few fruits).

有一点儿 + AdjectiveBefore descriptive word天气有一点儿冷。The weather is slightly cold.
Verb + 一点儿 + NounBetween verb and object喝一点儿茶吧。Drink a little tea.
