很

hěn adv.

To disobey or move with stubborn difficulty. Very; quite; extremely—an intensifier before adjectives and verbs.

The phonetic balance cushion connecting a subject to its descriptive word.

In Chinese, descriptive words (adjectives) can act like verbs and carry their own sentences. But a bare, naked adjective sounds abrupt, argumentative, or incomplete. 很 acts like a gentle shock absorber, smoothing the sentence out so it can rest naturally.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 很好 (hěn hǎo) — good / fine (neutral statement)
  • 很忙 (hěn máng) — busy
  • 很贵 (hěn guì) — expensive
  • 很便宜 (hěn piányi) — cheap
  • 很想 (hěn xiǎng) — miss very much / really want to
  • 他是很忙 他很忙

Never put 是 before 很. In Chinese, descriptive words don't need 'to be'.

  • 他不很高兴 他很不高兴

很 attaches to the front of feelings: 不高兴 (not happy) -> 我很不高兴 (I am very unhappy).

Does 他很忙 really mean 'He is VERY busy'?

No! Most of the time, 很 is just the neutral grammatical glue meaning 'is'.

Textbooks translate 很 as 'very', leading learners to believe Chinese speakers are constantly exaggerating. In reality, Chinese adjectives cannot stand alone at the end of a simple statement without feeling like a comparison. When someone says 他很忙, native speakers hear a calm, normal 'He is busy'. If you genuinely want to crank up the volume to 'extremely', use 非常 or 太...了 instead.
PhraseLiteral EnglishWhat Native Speakers Actually Hear
他很忙。He VERY busy.He is busy. (Neutral statement)
他非常忙。He extremely busy.He is truly, genuinely busy.
他太忙了!He too busy!He is overwhelmingly busy!

What happens if you leave out 很 and just say 他忙?

Leaving out 很 turns the sentence into an unfinished comparison: 'He is the busy one (not me)'.

In Chinese, a bare adjective parked without 很 or another descriptive word creates an automatic contrast with someone else. Saying 他忙 sounds like the beginning of an argument: 'He is busy (implying: but someone else is lazy)'. That's why whenever you simply want to state a fact without picking a fight, you must cushion it with 很: 他很忙, 苹果很贵.
Sentence StructureHow it LandsContext
他很忙。(With 很)Peaceful statement: 'He is busy.'Answering 'How is his day?'
他忙。(Bare adjective)Contrasting: 'He is busy (whereas I am not).'Direct comparison or contrast

Can I say 他是很忙 to match 'He IS very busy' in English?

No! Chinese descriptive words do not use 是. Say 他很忙, never 他是很忙.

In English, adjectives cannot exist without the linking verb 'to be' (am/is/are). But Chinese adjectives are naturally 'verbal'—they carry their own action power. Adding 是 on top of 很 creates a grammatical pile-up. Unless you are emphatically confirming a rumor ('He INDEED is busy!'), drop 是 entirely: 他很忙, 我很高兴.
