Why does 三个学生们 sound broken when 学生们 sounds fine?

们 is a group word, not a plural -s, so numbers and 很多 jam it.

们 marks a group of people, not a plural ending like English -s. It already tells the listener 'more than one', so 三个 or 很多 double-counts and sounds off. Natives say 三个学生 or 很多学生 and let the number do the plural work. If you want the group feel, 学生们 or 同学们 is fine, but never with a number attached.

Why does 狗们 sound like a cartoon while 朋友们 sounds completely normal?

们 sticks to people; animals get counted with 只 or 条 instead.

朋友们 works because friends are people. In real speech, 们 attaches to people words and to 我们, 你们, 他们, and that's about it. Animals get counted instead: 三只狗, 两只猫, never 狗们. You will see 小狗们 in kids' books where animals talk, but that's storybook talk. Safe rule: if it can't talk, it doesn't take 们.

When do I say 前边 instead of 前面?

Both mean 'front'; 前边 is the everyday pick for 'up ahead'.

前边 and 前面 both mean 'front', so nobody will blink if you pick either one. The 边 words point to a side or an edge of a space. The 面 words point to a surface or a flat area. For 'up ahead', a spot you can walk toward, 前边 is what people actually say. The same family covers 后边, 左边, 右边, 里边, and 外边. “前边有一个卖水果的老先生。” ── [《五块钱》](/read/five-yuan-kindness#s7)
