子 zǐ

HSK 1 Writing L2

A baby with a big head and arms stretched wide — that's the original picture behind 子.

In its oldest written form, 子 was drawn as a newborn: a big round head, two little arms sticking out, and a body below. Over the centuries the outline hardened into the three strokes you write today. That baby picture is why 子 shows up in words about children like 儿子, and also why it got glued onto plain objects like 桌子 and 杯子 as a noun tail.

子 a picture of a baby

Common Usage & Traps

  • 儿子 (érzi) — son
  • 名字 (míngzi) — name
  • 桌子 (zhuōzi) — table
  • 椅子 (yǐzi) — chair
  • 杯子 (bēizi) — cup
  • 书子 书

子 only sticks to a short list of nouns (桌子, 椅子, 杯子, 名字). It is not a switch you can flip on any word.

  • 这是我的子 这是我的儿子 / 这是我的女儿

子 on its own is not the everyday word for 'child'. Modern speech uses 儿子, 女儿, or 孩子.

  • 桌子 (zhuō zǐ) 桌子 (zhuōzi)

The 子 on a noun is toneless and quick. Give it a full third tone and you sound like a dictionary reading itself aloud.

My dictionary says 子 is zǐ. So why does everyone say 'zhuōzi' like the tone disappeared?

On its own 子 is zǐ; stuck onto 桌子, 椅子, 杯子, 名字 it flattens to a quick, toneless 'zi'.

By itself, 子 keeps its full third tone: zǐ. Glued onto a noun like 桌子, 椅子, 杯子, 名字, or 儿子, it flattens into a fast, toneless 'zi'. Native speakers never think about this rule; the tail simply rides along with the word in front of it. That is why 桌子 comes out as 'zhuō-z', not the careful 'zhuō zǐ' your dictionary suggests. Say the full third tone and you sound like you are reading a dictionary entry out loud.

If 子 means 'child', does 桌子 really mean 'table-child'?

In 桌子, 椅子, 杯子, 名字 the 子 means nothing at all — it is just a tail on the noun.

子 keeps its 'child' meaning in a word like 儿子, but in 桌子, 椅子, 杯子, and 名字 it means nothing. It is a tail glued onto the noun, roughly like the '-le' at the end of English 'little'. So 桌子 is simply 'table' — never 'table-child' — and 杯子 is simply 'cup'. Learn these as whole words and stop digging for a meaning inside every 子.

Can I glue 子 onto any noun to make it sound more Chinese?

No. 子 lives in a fixed list of words; 书子 and 电脑子 are simply not words.

子 appears in a short, memorized list: 桌子, 椅子, 杯子, 名字, 儿子. It is not a switch you can flip to dress up a plain noun. 书子, 门子, 电脑子, and 电视子 are all wrong; those words are just 书, 门, 电脑, and 电视. Some nouns take a 子, most take nothing, so treat every 子-word as one chunk you learn whole.

儿子 ends in 子 but 女儿 does not. How do I talk about my kid without picking a gender?

儿子 is a son, 女儿 is a daughter, and 孩子 covers both.

儿子 is locked to a male child, so never use it for your daughter. A daughter is 女儿, which ends in 儿, not 子 — the two words are not built the same way. When you do not want to pick a gender, 孩子 is the neutral word for 'child'. A family sentence can run “儿子和女儿都在北京工作。” (The son and daughter both work in Beijing.) ── 《找“大白”》
