要 yào, yāo

HSK 1 Writing L2

要 started as a picture of hands at a waist — it meant 'waist' long before it meant 'want'.

The old form of 要 stacks a hand shape (覀) on top of 女, a person. Together they show hands resting at someone's waist. That is why 要 first meant 'waist' — later writers added the body part 月 to build 腰, the character we use today. The modern meaning 'want' came from borrowing the character for its sound, not from the picture.

覀 hands (old picture) 女 person

Common Usage & Traps

  • 要水 (yào shuǐ) — want water (asking at a restaurant)
  • 要钱 (yào qián) — want money / asking for money
  • 要去 (yào qù) — going to go / need to go
  • 要买 (yào mǎi) — want to buy
  • 不要 (bù yào) — don't want (a thing) / don't!
  • 要上课 (yào shàngkè) — have class / need to go to class
  • 我不要去 我不想去

不要 is for refusing a thing or telling someone to stop. If you just don't feel like going, 不想 is the normal choice.

  • 你不要去 (when you mean 'you don't have to go') 你不用去

不要 + action verb is a command: 'don't go!' To say there's no need, use 不用.

What's the difference between 我要去 and 我想去?

要 sounds like a decision or a need; 想 sounds like a wish.

要 is direct. Say 我要去 and people hear 'I'm going' or 'I need to go'. 想 is softer, closer to 'I feel like going'. When you order food, 我要这个 is completely normal. Swap in 我想 and it sounds like you're still deciding out loud.

Telling a friend your plan我要去北京我想去北京 (sounds like a daydream)
Inviting someone politely我想请你吃饭我要请你吃饭 (sounds like a command)
Ordering in a shop我要这个我想要这个 (too hesitant)

How do I say 'I don't want to' — 不要, 不想, or 不用?

不想 = not in the mood. 不要 = don't! or refusing a thing. 不用 = no need.

要 has three different negatives, and mixing them up changes your meaning fast. 不想 is about you not feeling like an action: 我不想吃饭. 不要 usually refuses a thing (我不要这个) or tells someone to stop (不要走!). 不用 simply means there's no need: 明天不用去. Get these backwards and you sound like you're bossing people around.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Not in the mood for something我不想吃饭我不要吃饭 (sounds like a toddler or a command)
Refusing an object我不要这个我不想这个
No need to do it明天不用去明天不要去 (means 'don't go')

Can 要 mean 'going to', and how does it differ from 会?

要 = about to happen or already planned. 会 = prediction or skill.

要 before a verb often means something is about to happen: 要下雨了, look at those clouds. It also marks your own plans: 明天我要去学校. 会 is for predictions and abilities instead: 他会来, 我会说中文. So 我会帮你 is a promise, while 我要帮你 sounds more like 'I want to help you'.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Something about to happen要下雨了会下雨了
Your own plan明天我要去学校明天我会去学校 (sounds like a prediction about yourself)
Promise or skill我会帮你我要帮你 (means 'I want to help')

When is 要 read yāo instead of yào?

It's yào almost everywhere. The one word you'll actually meet is 要求 (yāoqiú).

Everyday 要 is yào: 要钱, 要去, 不要. The exception is 要求, meaning 'to ask for' or 'to demand', where it's yāo. So when those two characters sit together, say yāoqiú. Anywhere else, keep it plain yào and nobody will blink.
