前 qián

前 is a foot on a boat — the part that moves ahead first.

The old form of 前 plants a foot (止) on a boat (舟). A foot on a boat means pushing forward, moving on. A knife (刂) got tacked on later, back when 前 also meant 'to cut'. That's why 前 means the front, the ahead, the before — the spot you reach first.

止 foot, stepping 舟 boat 刂 knife, added later

Common Usage & Traps

  • 前面 (qiánmiàn) — in front, ahead
  • 前边 (qiánbiān) — up ahead, over there in front
  • 以前 (yǐqián) — before, in the past
  • 前天 (qiántiān) — the day before yesterday
  • 往前 (wǎng qián) — go forward, keep going straight
  • 我在前他 我在他前面

Bare 前 can't sit before a person like an English bridge word. You need 前面 or 前边 after the noun: 他前面.

  • 前个星期 上个星期

For 'last week' Chinese says 上个星期. 前 handles 'before' in time, but 'last' is 上.

What's the difference between 前 and 以前 when I want to say 'before'?

以前 is a standalone time word; bare 前 glues onto other words.

以前 stands alone as a time word: 我以前住北京 means 'I used to live in Beijing.' Bare 前 almost never stands alone for 'before' in speech. It snaps onto a time noun: 三天前 (three days ago), 饭前 (before a meal), 睡前 (before sleep). So if you mean 'back then', reach for 以前. If you're counting backward from a point, use [time] + 前.

Past in general我以前学过中文我前学过中文
Counting back三天前他来过三天以前他来过 (fine but wordy)
Before an action饭前洗手以前饭洗手

Is there any real difference between 前面 and 前边?

Almost none — 前面 is the safe default, 前边 leans spoken and physical.

Both mean 'in front / ahead'. 前面 is the standard choice and works everywhere, including abstract 'earlier': 前面说过的话. 前边 is more spoken and usually points at a physical spot up ahead. If you're unsure, say 前面 — nobody will blink. “晚上,大中去公司前边的一个小饭店吃饭。” (In the evening, Dazhong goes to a small restaurant to eat.) ── 《五块钱》

Where does 前 go in a sentence — before or after the verb?

Time-with-前 goes before the verb, never after it.

Chinese puts time expressions up front, before the verb. So 'three days ago he came' is 他三天前来了, not 他来了三天前. Same with 以前: 我以前住这儿 means 'I used to live here.' The only time 前 trails something is when it's glued to a noun as a location: 房子前面 (in front of the house).

Past time phrase他三天前来了他来了三天前
Past habit我以前抽烟我抽烟以前
Location phrase房子前面有棵树前面房子有棵树

Can I just stick 前 on any time word to mean 'the one before'?

前天 and 前年 exist, but 前月 and 前星期 do not — use 上.

前天 (day before yesterday) and 前年 (year before last) are fixed, everyday words. But 'last month' is 上个月, not 前月, and 'last week' is 上个星期, not 前个星期. The 前-prefix only survived for days and years. For months and weeks, Chinese uses 上.
