年 nián

HSK 1 Writing L2

年 started as a picture of a person hauling home a stalk of ripe grain on their back.

The oldest forms show a grain plant on top and a walking person below. Bring the harvest in, and one year is done — that's why 年 means 'year'. Today's 年 has worn down, so don't bother hunting for the parts in the modern shape.

禾 (grain stalk) the crop — the top of the old form 人 (person) the one carrying it home — the bottom of the old form

Common Usage & Traps

  • 今年 (jīnnián) — this year
  • 明年 (míngnián) — next year
  • 去年 (qùnián) — last year
  • 新年 (xīnnián) — New Year (usually the day, often Jan 1)
  • 过年 (guònián) — to celebrate the Spring Festival
  • 一年 (yì nián) — one year
  • 几年 (jǐ nián) — how many years
  • 我二十年 我二十岁 / 我今年二十

年 counts calendar time, not how old you are. Age needs 岁.

  • 下一年我去中国 明年我去中国

下一年 only shows up in reports and sequencing. Everyday 'next year' is 明年.

  • 一个年 一年

年 is already the counting word. Slapping 个 on it doubles up the counter.

Why can't I say 我二十年 to mean 'I'm 20 years old'?

年 tracks calendar time; 岁 tracks how old a living thing is.

年 is a calendar unit: 今年, 去年, 三年. It measures time passing, not how long a person has existed. 岁 is the age unit, used for people and animals. Say 我二十年 and you've turned yourself into a duration, like saying 'I am twenty years long'. Real speech is 我二十岁, 我今年二十, or the plain question 你多大?

Stating a duration我学了三年中文我学了三十岁中文
Asking someone's age你多大?/ 你几岁?你几年?

Why is it 去年 and 明年, when months are 上个月 and 下个月?

Months and weeks use 上/下; years use 去/明 and 前/后 instead.

Months and weeks move with 上 and 下: 上个月, 下个月, 上星期. Years break that pattern completely. Last year is 去年, next year is 明年, and neither one takes 上 or 下 in daily speech. 上年 and 下一年 do exist, but they live in business reports and legal writing, not in chat. Reach further out and years switch to 前 and 后: 前年 is two years ago, 后年 is two years from now.

Talking about last year去年上年
Talking about next year明年下一年
Talking about months上个月 / 下个月去个月 / 明个月

Do people say 过年 or 过新年 when they mean celebrating New Year?

过年 is the activity of celebrating Spring Festival; 新年 is just the name.

过年 is the whole Spring Festival package: going home, big meals, red envelopes, firecrackers. 新年 is a label, not something you do, and it often points at January 1 rather than the lunar holiday. The festival's official name is 春节, which is what calendars and news anchors use. So you text 新年快乐 as a greeting, but you 回家过年 to actually take the week off.

Going home for the holiday回家过年回家过新年 (songlike)
