来 lái

HSK 1 Writing L2

来 started as a drawing of a wheat plant. It meant 'wheat' first, then got borrowed to mean 'come'.

The old form of 来 is a picture of a wheat stalk with grains hanging off it. Long ago, the word for 'wheat' and the word for 'come' sounded the same. So people borrowed 来 to write 'come', and the wheat meaning faded away. Hook: picture a wheat stalk walking toward you — that's 来.

来 wheat plant (the original picture)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 来中国 (lái Zhōngguó) — come to China
  • 来我家 (lái wǒ jiā) — come to my place
  • 来吃饭 (lái chīfàn) — come over for a meal
  • 来一个 (lái yí ge) — give me one (ordering)
  • 来这儿 (lái zhèr) — come here
  • 来晚了 (lái wǎn le) — came late
  • 我来去你家 我来你家 / 我去你家

You can't stack 来 and 去 like 'come go'. Pick one direction: 来 points toward the listener, 去 points away.

  • 我来中国昨天 我昨天来中国了

English dumps the time word at the end. Chinese puts time words like 昨天 before the verb: 昨天来, never 来昨天.

Your friend is home and you're heading over. Why do you say 我来你家, not 我去你家?

来 moves toward the listener; 去 moves away. So 我来你家 is right.

来 means 'come', and it points at the person you're talking to. 去 means 'go', and it points away from them. So if your friend is home and you're on your way, say 我来你家. If that friend isn't there and you're telling someone else, use 我去他家. Same trip — 来 or 去 just depends on who's listening.
SituationNaturalAvoid
Friend waits at home, you head over我来你家我去你家 (sounds like you're going somewhere they're not)
At work, telling a coworker you're going home我回家我来家 (nobody is home for you to 'come' toward)
You're home, telling a friend to come to you你来我这儿你去我这儿 (wrong direction)

At a coffee shop, can you just say 来一杯 to order?

Yes. 来一杯 is normal and friendly — it means 'give me one'.

来 isn't only 'come'. In shops and restaurants it quietly means 'give me'. Order with 来 + number + thing: 来一杯咖啡, 来一个. It's short, friendly, and exactly what locals say. The stiff version, 我要买一杯咖啡, is fine but sounds like a textbook.
WhereNaturalAvoid
At a cafe来一杯咖啡我要买一杯咖啡 (fine but stiff)
At a snack stand来一个给我一个 (a bit blunt)
Round two at a bar再来一个我再买一个 (sounds robotic)

Your friend is moving boxes and asks who can help. Can you just shout 我来?

Yes. 我来 means 'I've got it', not 'I come'.

Besides 'come', 来 often replaces the real verb when you volunteer. If someone asks who'll do a job, 我来 means 'I'll do it'. You can also put it before a verb: 我来做 means 'let me do it'. So 我来你家 means 'I come to your place', but a bare 我来 means 'I've got it'.
SituationNaturalAvoid
Someone asks who'll help我来!我去! (sounds like you're leaving, not helping)
You offer to do a task让我来让我去 (means 'let me go', wrong meaning)
Jumping in to do it now我来做我做来 (来 goes before the verb)
