觉 jiào, jué

To wake from sleep and become aware of the world. To feel, perceive, think, or realize; a sleep or nap. An eye (见) under a cover opening from sleep into awareness.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 觉得 (juéde) — to feel, to think
  • 睡觉 (shuìjiào) — to sleep

觉 alone does not mean 'feel/think' in everyday speech.

睡觉 acts as a set pair. Put the duration after 睡, not after 睡觉.

觉 alone does not mean 'sleep'. Use 睡觉.

Why does 觉 sound like jué in 觉得 but jiào in 睡觉?

Same character, two readings: jué means feel or think, jiào means sleep.

The character 觉 has two everyday readings, and you learn them inside words. 觉得 uses jué and means 'feel' or 'think'. 睡觉 uses jiào and means 'sleep'. If you mix them up, native speakers still understand, but it sounds wrong.

Can you say 我觉他很累 instead of 我觉得他很累?

No. 觉 alone does not mean 'feel/think' in everyday speech; use 觉得.

In daily Mandarin, 觉 is not used by itself to mean 'I feel' or 'I think'. It shows up inside words like 觉得 and 睡觉.

I think he is tired
I want to sleep

Why is 我睡了八个小时 fine, but 我睡觉了八个小时 sounds wrong?

睡觉 works as a set pair; put the duration after 睡, not after 睡觉.

睡觉 is a two-part word for sleeping, and it dislikes having time stuffed after it. To say how long you slept, use 睡 as the main action: 我睡了八个小时. If you keep 觉, say 我睡了八个小时的觉, but that sounds wordy.
