高 gāo

高 is a picture of a tall building — a tower with a roof, windows, and walls.

The old form of 高 shows a multi-story structure: a roof at the top, a window in the middle, and a base or door at the bottom. That's why it means tall or high — you're looking up at a tower. In modern Chinese, 高 also works as a surname, but that's a separate name usage, not part of the picture.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 高兴 (gāoxìng) — happy, glad
  • 很高 (hěn gāo) — very tall or high
  • 不高 (bù gāo) — not tall or high
  • 高老师 (Gāo lǎoshī) — Teacher Gao
  • 高先生 (Gāo xiānshēng) — Mr. Gao
  • 我是高 我很高

是 doesn't work with describing words like 高. Use 很 for a simple description.

  • 他高 他很高

Bare 高 sounds contrastive or unfinished. Add 很 for a neutral statement.

  • 老师高 高老师

If you mean Teacher Gao, the surname goes before the title. To describe a tall teacher, say 老师很高.

Why do Chinese people say 我很高 instead of 我是高?

Use 很 with describing words like 高; 是 is not needed for simple description.

是 links two nouns: 我是学生. But 高 is not a noun here. To describe someone as tall, put 很 before 高: 我很高. The 很 doesn't always mean 'very' — it often just makes the sentence sound neutral and complete. If you really want 'very', stress 很. But for HSK1, remember: 我很高. Don't say 我是高.

Does the 高 in 高兴 mean 'tall'?

No. 高兴 is a fixed word for happy; don't split it into 高 + 兴.

高兴 means happy, and the 高 inside does not mean tall. Treat 高兴 as one chunk, not as 高 + 兴. You can say 我很高兴 or 很高兴认识你. If you want to say someone is tall, use 高 with 很: 他很高.

Is 高 a surname, and how do I tell it apart from 'tall'?

Yes, 高 is a common surname. In 高老师, it means Teacher Gao, not tall teacher.

When 高 comes before a title like 老师 or 先生, it is almost always a surname. So 高老师 means Teacher Gao, not tall teacher. If you want to say a teacher is tall, put 高 after 很: 那个老师很高. Word order tells you which meaning is active.
