他们

tā men pron.

they; them (masculine or mixed gender)

they; them (masculine or mixed gender)

Third-person plural pronoun 'they' or 'them' for males or mixed-gender groups (他 he + 们 plural suffix).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 他们是谁 (tāmen shì shéi) — Who are they?
  • 他们很忙 (tāmen hěn máng) — They are very busy.
  • 给他们钱 (gěi tāmen qián) — give them money
  • 他们三个 (tāmen sān ge) — the three of them
  • 他们的老师 (tāmen de lǎoshī) — their teacher
  • 三个他们 他们三个

Chinese puts the pronoun before the number: 他们三个, not 三个他们.

  • 给钱他们 给他们钱

In a 给 sentence, the person comes right after 给, then the thing.

One guy, five women: do you say 他们 or 她们?

Mixed groups take 他们; all-women groups take 她们.

他们 is the safe word for a group of men, or a mix of men and women. 她们 is used when every person in the group is female. 它们 is for animals or objects, not people. If you are not sure about a human group, 他们 will not offend anyone.

Mixed men and women他们她们
All women她们他们
All men他们她们
Animals or things它们他们

Does 他们 change when it means 'them', as in 'give them'?

Chinese 他们 does not change for 'them'.

English changes they to them, but Chinese keeps 他们 for both. So 'They are busy' is 他们很忙, and 'Give them money' is 给他们钱. The pronoun goes right after 给, with no change in shape.

Give them money给他们钱给钱他们

Why is 'the three of them' 他们三个, not 三个他们?

Put the pronoun first: 他们三个, not 三个他们.

English says 'three of them', so your brain wants 三个他们. Chinese does the opposite: 他们三个. The pronoun comes first, then the number and measure word. This same pattern gives 我们两个, 你们五个, and 他们三个人.

Three of them他们三个三个他们
Two of us我们两个两个我们
All five of you你们五个五个你们
