朋友

friend

A friend or companion. Formed by two moons (月) sitting side-by-side like two loyal companions walking together.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 好朋友 (hǎo péng you) — good friend
  • 新朋友 (xīn péng you) — new friend
  • 交朋友 (jiāo péng you) — to make friends (the act)
  • 男朋友 (nán péng you) — boyfriend (romantic)
  • 女朋友 (nǚ péng you) — girlfriend (romantic)
  • 我想做朋友 我想交朋友

做朋友 is not broken Chinese, it just means 'be friends' — a state. 交朋友 is the effort of going out and making them. Mixing them sounds like you want to become someone's friend without meeting anyone.

  • 三个朋友们 三个朋友

们 already covers 'more than one', so a number in front of it is double-counting. Native ears hear it the way English ears hear 'three friendses'.

  • 他是我男朋友 (meaning: my male friend) 他是我一个朋友 / 我的男性朋友

男朋友 always means romantic boyfriend. Calling a platonic guy friend 我男朋友 is a public announcement, not a description.

Why does 'make friends' translate as 交朋友 and not 做朋友?

交朋友 is the act of making a friend; 做朋友 is the state of being one.

You use 交朋友 when you're out doing the work: 我想多交朋友. You use 做朋友 once the relationship already exists: 我们做朋友吧. 交 carries a handing-over feel, which fits starting something new. 做 just means 'serve as' or 'be', so it describes a role you already hold. Chinese splits these two jobs that English lumps under 'make friends'.

Can you say 三个朋友们 for 'three friends'?

No. 们 already means 'more than one', so adding a number is double-counting.

们 works like the word 'folks' — a loose tag for a vague crowd of people. Once you say 三, the plural is already crystal clear, so 们 becomes redundant noise. Say 朋友们 when you mean friends in general, like addressing a group: 朋友们,谢谢你们. Say 三个朋友 the moment a number shows up.

Any number at all present一群朋友 (a bunch of friends)一群朋友们

If I call a male coworker 我男朋友, what did I just announce?

You announced you two are dating. 男朋友 means romantic partner, never 'male friend'.

男朋友 and 女朋友 match English boyfriend and girlfriend exactly, romance included. There is no neutral reading of 'a guy friend who is a boy'. For a platonic friend, say 男性朋友 or 女性朋友, which sound clinical but safe. In casual speech people dodge it with 我一个朋友, 哥们儿, or 闺蜜 instead.

Do you always need 个 in front of 朋友?

No. 个 only shows up when you're counting or introducing someone new.

Treat 个 like a spotlight: it singles out one countable body. Once everyone already knows which friend you mean, the spotlight is pointless, so 我朋友昨天搬走了 sounds perfectly fine. You reach for 个 when the person is fresh information: 我有个朋友在成都. Bare 朋友 also works when you're naming a role rather than counting heads.

“新朋友,叫什么?” (A new friend — what's their name?)
