Why does 你去吗 ask a question but 你去吧 pushes someone to go?

吗 asks a real yes/no question; 吧 nudges, suggests, or checks a guess.

吗 turns a plain statement into a genuine do-you-or-don't-you question, so 你去吗 = 'Are you going?'. 吧 never digs for new information — it leans on the other person with a nudge, a plan, or a soft guess. When the old man says 去上学吧, he isn't asking the kid anything; he's telling him to go. One wrinkle: 吧 can still fish for agreement with a rising tone, like 你是学生吧? ('You're a student, right?'), but there you already half-know the answer. 吗 means you honestly don't. “去上学吧,上车。” ── [《五块钱》](/read/five-yuan-kindness#s10)

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Genuine question, you don't knowStatement +
Nudge, plan, or suggestionVerb +

Why is 你去哪儿吗 wrong when 你去哪儿呢 sounds perfectly normal?

吗 can't tag a sentence that already has a question word like 哪儿 or 谁.

吗 exists to flip a plain statement into a yes/no question, where the answer is 是/不是 or 去/不去. Once 哪儿, 谁, 什么, or 几 is already in the sentence, the question is built — and 吗 has nothing left to do. So 你去哪儿吗 crashes because 哪儿 asks 'where' while 吗 tries to ask 'yes or no' at the same time. 呢 does the opposite job: it softens a question-word question, so 你去哪儿呢 sounds curious instead of blunt.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Yes/no questionStatement +
Question-word question, softened

Why is 你呢 the natural way to say 'and you?

你呢 is a short 'what about you?' tag — 吗 needs a full statement first.

你呢 is a bounce-back tag: 我很好,你呢? = 'I'm good — and you?'. It isn't asking a fresh yes/no question; it simply hands the same question back to the other person. 吗 works differently, needing a complete statement in front of it to flip into a question, like 你是学生吗?. That's why 你吗 alone leaves people with nothing to answer — it sounds like a broken half-question, not a real ask.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Bounce a question backNoun/Pronoun +
Real yes/no questionFull statement +

Why does 走吧 mean 'let's go' while 走了吧 feels like 'we're heading out now, right?

了 adds a 'now it's happening' feel; 吧 still just invites agreement.

走吧 is a plain nudge — you simply want everyone to move. 走了吧 slides 了 in front of 吧, and 了 marks a change: from staying to leaving. So it carries a 'time's up, let's head out now' flavor, while 吧 keeps politely fishing for a nod. Don't treat them like swap-in softeners. 吧 floats a proposal, and 了 reports that a new situation has already started.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Simple suggestion, nothing has shifted yetVerb +
Suggestion once the moment has arrivedVerb +
