知 zhī

To know, perceive, or understand with sharp accuracy. To realize, be aware of, recognize, or inform; knowledge. An arrow (矢) shot straight from a mouth (口): words that hit the mark equal knowing.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 知道 (zhīdào) — to know (a fact)
  • 不知道 (bù zhīdào) — don't know
  • 知道了 (zhīdào le) — got it; now I know
  • 我知他 我知道他

Bare 知 sounds like old poetry; modern speech needs 道.

  • 知你叫什么名字 知道你叫什么名字

知 alone rarely works as a verb in everyday questions.

  • 我不知 我不知道

The negative form almost always uses 不知道, not bare 不知.

Can you just say 我知 without 道, or does that sound like you're quoting an ancient poem?

Bare 知 sounds like a fortune cookie; real people say 知道.

In modern Mandarin, 知 mostly lives inside 知道. Standing alone as a verb, it sounds stiff and classical. If you tell a friend 我知, they'll picture you in a hanfu holding a scroll. Say 我知道 and you sound like a normal person.

If you've met your friend's brother once, do you 知道 him or 认识 him?

认识 = you've met them; 知道 = you know the fact they exist.

知道 is about information: you know a fact, a name, or a piece of news. 认识 is about familiarity: you've met the person, you know who they are face-to-face. You can 知道 a celebrity without ever 认识 them. Mixing these up is one of the most common HSK 1 slip-ups.

Met the person我认识他我知道他 (if you mean you've met)
Know a fact我知道他在北京我认识他在北京
Celebrity you've never met我知道他,但不认识他我认识他 (wrong if you've never met)

Why does 我知道了 mean 'got it' but 我知道 just means 'I know'?

了 turns 我知道 from 'I know' into 'now I know' or 'got it.'

Without 了, 我知道 states a fact you already hold. Adding 了 signals a new state: you didn't know before, now you do. So 我知道了 is the natural 'okay, understood' when someone explains something. Said with a flat tone, it can also sound like 'yeah, yeah, I heard you.'

New info我知道了,谢谢我知道,谢谢 (sounds like you already knew)
Already knew我知道他住哪儿我知道了 (if you mean you always knew)
Responding to orders我知道了我知道 (can sound like 'I know already, stop')
