The left side 讠 is a squished version of 言, meaning speech, so that's your meaning clue. The right side 吾 (wú) is an old word for 'I/me', but here it works mainly as a sound clue, because 吾 sounds close to 语 (yǔ). So 语 is a speech character whose second half tells you how to say it.
Nobody says 中国语 for Chinese. That shape is Japanese-style 中国語, and it marks you as a total outsider instantly.
语 cannot stand in a sentence by itself. It always needs a partner in front of it, or the pair 语言.
