What is the difference between 用 and 使 when both can mean 'to use'?

用 is the everyday 'use'. 使 is mostly 'make/cause' and is formal; do not use it as a drop-in replacement for 用.

用 is the general, neutral verb for using something: 用电脑, 用手机, 用中文. 使 is not the everyday word for 'use'. In modern Mandarin it usually means 'to make' or 'to cause' in fixed or formal patterns like 使人高兴 'make people happy'. The formal compound 使用 does mean 'to use', but bare 使 does not work like 用 in daily speech. If you say 使我手机 to mean 'use my phone', it sounds wrong.

不用 means 'no need / don't have to'. 没用 means 'useless'. Same characters, opposite jobs.
