想 xiǎng

想 = 相 (look) + 心 (heart) — your heart looking at something.

相 sits on top: an eye (目) beside a tree (木), the idea of looking or appearance. Underneath is 心, the heart. Treat it as a memory hook: your heart looking toward something — thinking of it, missing it, wanting it.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 我想你 (wǒ xiǎng nǐ) — I miss you
  • 我想去 (wǒ xiǎng qù) — I want to go
  • 想一想 (xiǎng yi xiǎng) — think it over
  • 不想 (bù xiǎng) — don't want to
  • 想家 (xiǎng jiā) — homesick, miss home
  • 我想这个 我要这个

想 before a thing sounds like you're thinking about it or missing it. To say you want an item, use 要.

Can you say 我想他很聪明 to mean 'I think he's smart'?

No. 想 never means 'I think that.' For opinions, use 觉得.

想 only covers wanting (我想去) and missing (我想你). It does not introduce a view or opinion. When you state what you think, Chinese uses 觉得. So 'I think he's smart' is 我觉得他很聪明. Say 我想他很聪明 and you sound like you miss him being smart.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Opinion我觉得他很聪明我想他很聪明
Wanting to do我想去中国—
Missing someone我想你—

Why does 我想你 mean 'I miss you' but 我想去 means 'I want to go'?

What follows 想 decides everything: a person means 'miss,' a verb means 'want to.'

The word after 想 picks the meaning. Follow it with a person or a place and it means 'miss' — 我想你, 我想家. Follow it with a verb and it means 'want to' — 我想去, 我想吃. Same character, two very different jobs.
What follows 想MeaningExample
A person or placemiss我想你 (I miss you)
A verbwant to我想去 (I want to go)
一 + 想give it thought想一想 (think it over)

What's the difference between 我想去 and 我要去?

想 is a soft wish. 要 is a firm want or a decision already made.

想 is the gentle version — a wish, like 'I'd like to go.' 要 pushes harder — a decision or a demand, like 'I'm going' or 'I want it, period.' Ordering with 我要这个 is normal and direct. 我想要这个 sounds more hesitant, almost over-polite.
