四 sì

HSK 1 Writing L2

四 looks nothing like 一, 二, 三 for a real reason: it was borrowed, not drawn.

Old Chinese wrote four as four stacked lines, 亖. That version got scrapped, probably because four lines and three lines blur together when you're carving or reading fast. The character 四 was pulled in to do the job instead — it likely started life as a picture of a nose or nostrils ('si' sounds). So 四 is a sound-alike that got drafted into number duty, and the original meaning was left behind. Don't hunt for meaning inside the strokes.

囗 outer box — shape only, carries no meaning here 儿 inner strokes — leftover shape, not 'legs' or 'person'

Common Usage & Traps

  • 四个 (sì ge) — four of something
  • 四月 (Sìyuè) — April
  • 星期四 (Xīngqīsì) — Thursday
  • 四岁 (sì suì) — four years old
  • 四十 (sìshí) — forty
  • 四块 (sì kuài) — four yuan, said out loud
  • 我有四岁 我四岁

No 有. English says 'I have four years,' Chinese just says 'I four years.'

  • 四元 四块

块 is what people say at the stall. 元 lives on forms, receipts and price tags.

  • 十四个块 十四块

Numbers stack directly onto 块. Stuffing 个 in there sounds like a robot.

Why do Chinese people keep confusing 四 and 十 when they talk?

四 (sì) and 十 (shí) collapse into the same blur on a bad phone line.

四 is fourth tone and starts with a flat s. 十 is second tone and starts with a curled-up sh. That's three clues, and a crackly phone call can kill all three at once. So people confirm out loud instead of repeating themselves: 四,一二三四的四. For ten they say 十,二十的十. Nobody has forgotten how to speak — real audio is just messy.

Clarifying ten十,二十的十十,和四一样的四

Can you say 我有四岁 to mean 'I'm four years old'?

No. 我四岁 is the whole sentence — 有 would mean you own four years.

English says 'I have four years,' so beginners reflexively grab 有 and produce 我有四岁. Chinese drops the verb entirely: 我四岁. 有 means possession, and your age isn't something you hold in your pocket. Once the birthday hits, add 了: 我四岁了. Asking works the same way — 你几岁, never 你有几岁.

Stating your age我四岁我有四岁
Just turned four我四岁了我有四岁了
Asking a kid你几岁你有几岁

Buying something for four yuan — do I say 四块 or 四元?

四块 at the street stall. 四元 belongs on forms and receipts.

块 is the spoken word for 'yuan'; 元 is the formal written one. Haggling at a vegetable stall sounds like 四块行不行. 元 turns up on bank slips, invoices and printed price tags. Saying 四元 to a vendor is like announcing 'four United States dollars' at a hot dog cart — understood, but strange. The story title itself makes the call: 《五块钱》, using 块, not 元 ── 《五块钱》.

Why do some Chinese people dodge the number four?

四 sounds like 死, the word for death. It's superstition, not grammar.

四 (sì) sits very close to 死 (sǐ), meaning death, and in Cantonese they're nearly identical. So some hospitals and apartment towers skip the fourth floor, and some drivers dodge 4 on a license plate. It's the same instinct as skipping floor 13 in the West. In math class, though, 四 is just four — nobody flinches.
