生 shēng

HSK 1 Writing L2

生 is a tiny sprout pushing up out of the ground.

The old form of 生 draws a little plant shoot rising above a line that stands for soil. That one picture grew into 'be born', 'grow', 'life', and 'raw' — anything fresh that has just come up. Once you see the sprout, 生日 and 生的 stop feeling random.

top (the shoot) a young plant pushing upward bottom line the ground it breaks through

Common Usage & Traps

  • 生日 (shēngrì) — birthday
  • 学生 (xué.sheng) — student
  • 先生 (xiān.sheng) — Mr.; sir; husband
  • 医生 (yīshēng) — doctor
  • 生词 (shēngcí) — new vocabulary word
  • 我生在北京。 我出生在北京。

生 is what the mother does. For your own arrival on earth you need 出生.

  • 学生 read as xuéshēng 学生 read as xué.sheng

The second syllable goes light and quick. Full first tone sounds like reciting a dictionary.

  • 这个肉是生。 这个肉是生的。

Standing alone as 'raw', 生 takes 的. Inside compounds it doesn't: 生菜, 生肉.

Why does 先生 mean 'Mr.' in one sentence and 'husband' in another?

先生 began as 'born earlier' — elder, then teacher, then 'Mr.', and at home, 'husband'.

先生 started life meaning 'the one born before you' — an elder, and by extension a teacher. That respect wore down into a polite title for any man: 王先生 is just 'Mr. Wang'. At home it took a different turn and became the everyday word for husband: 我先生是医生. Context does all the work here. With 我 in front, it's your husband; with a surname, it's that man. So 我先生 = my husband, 李先生 = Mr. Li, 王老师 = Teacher Wang.
SituationNaturalAvoid
Greeting a man politely王先生,您好。王老公,您好。 (老公 only means your own husband)
Talking about your husband我先生是医生。我男人是医生。 (rough, very casual)
Calling your teacher王老师,您好。王先生,您好。 (sounds dated in a classroom)

Can you say 我生在北京 to mean 'I was born in Beijing'?

No — 我生在北京 sounds like you gave birth in Beijing. Use 我出生在北京。

生 is what the mother does: 她生了一个男孩 means she had a boy. For your own arrival on earth, Chinese switches to 出生, literally 'come out born'. So you 出生 in Beijing, while your mother did the 生-ing in the same city. Ask 你哪年出生的 and you get a birth year, not a delivery-room story. Flip the two and natives will picture you in a hospital bed.
MeaningNaturalAvoid
I was born in Beijing我出生在北京。我生在北京。
She gave birth to a boy她生了一个男孩。她出生了一个男孩。
When were you born?你是哪年出生的?你是哪年生的? (asks when you gave birth)

How can the same 生 mean both 'birth' (生日) and 'raw' (生的)?

One fresh sprout, two branches: birth in 生日, raw in 生的.

生 started as a picture of a sprout breaking through soil — something fresh, just come up. That single idea later split into two everyday branches. Branch one is birth and life: 生日, 出生. Branch two is raw and uncooked: 生的, 生菜, 生水. So a 生的鸡蛋 is a raw egg and a 生日 is your birth day. Same sprout underneath, two very different directions.

生日birthbirthday
出生birthto be born
生的rawraw, uncooked
生菜rawlettuce

Is 学生 pronounced xuéshēng or xué.sheng?

It's xué.sheng — 生 goes light and flat, just like in 先生.

That 生 goes neutral in 学生 and 先生 — light, short, and flat. Say xuéshēng with a full first tone and you sound like you're reading a word list aloud. Don't turn this into a rule, though: 医生 keeps a full yīshēng, and so do 生日 and 生词. Neutral tone in these two words is memory work, not a system you can apply everywhere. Learn them as whole chunks and you're done.
