钱 qián

钱 wears the metal radical 钅 on its left, because early Chinese money was metal.

The left side is 钅, the shortened form of 金 (metal). It shows up in every metal word: 银 (silver), 铁 (iron), 铜 (copper). The right side 戋 only hints at the sound. Bronze coins were the original cash, so the whole character is basically 'metal object you trade'.

钅 metal (shortened 金) 戋 sound hint (jiān)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 多少钱 (duōshao qián) — how much (money)?
  • 有钱 (yǒu qián) — to have money; to be rich
  • 没有钱 (méiyǒu qián) — to have no money
  • 我的钱 (wǒ de qián) — my money
  • 一块钱 (yí kuài qián) — one yuan
  • 五块钱 (wǔ kuài qián) — five yuan
  • 五钱 五块钱

钱 is money in general. The counting unit for yuan is 块, so you say 五块钱 or just 五块.

  • 他很钱 他很有钱

钱 is a thing, not a quality. 很 can't sit right in front of it, so you need 有 in between.

  • 我不有钱 我没有钱

有 flips to 没有 when you say you don't have something. 不 doesn't work here.

When you name a price, is it 五钱, 五块, or 五块钱?

钱 means money in general; the counting unit for yuan is 块, not 钱.

钱 is the everyday word for money as a vague thing you have or don't have. When you actually count yuan out loud, Chinese uses the unit 块, not 钱. Five yuan is 五块钱 — 块 does the counting and 钱 just tags on 'money'. You can even drop it: 五块 still works fine. “我只有五块钱。” (I only have five yuan.) ── 《五块钱》

General money我没有钱。我没有块。
Five yuan五块钱。五钱。
Price short form五块。五钱。

How do you say someone is rich — 他很钱 or 他很有钱?

Money is a thing you have, so 'rich' is literally 很有钱.

You can't put 很 straight in front of 钱, because 钱 is a thing, not a quality. Chinese says 他很有钱 — 'he very much has money'. That same 有钱 doesn't only mean 'he has money'; it also just means he's rich.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Rich他很有钱。他很钱。
Has money他有钱。他钱有。
No money他没有钱。他不有钱。

Asking the price: is it 多少钱 or 几块钱?

多少钱 works for any price; 几块钱 expects just a few yuan.

多少钱 is the default way to ask a price — it fits anything from two yuan to two thousand. 几块钱 narrows it: 几 means 'a few', so you're really asking 'how many (small) yuan?'. That's why you never say 几钱 — 几 always needs a counting word like 块 after it.

Ask any price多少钱?几钱?
Expect a small price几块钱?几钱?
