两 liǎng

HSK 1 Writing L2

A balancing scale holding a pair of equal weights. Two, both, a couple, several; a 50-gram tael unit. Picture a top beam with two equal weights hanging inside a frame, left and right.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 两个 (liǎng gè) — two (of something)
  • 两天 (liǎng tiān) — two days
  • 两点 (liǎng diǎn) — two o'clock
  • 两岁 (liǎng suì) — two years old
  • 两个人 (liǎng gè rén) — two people
  • 二个人 两个人

Use 两 before measure words like 个; 二 is for counting numbers (1, 2, 3) or in compound numbers like 二十.

  • 二天 两天

Use 两 before measure words like 天; 二 is not used directly before measure words in spoken Chinese.

When should I use 两 instead of 二 for the number two?

Use 两 before measure words; use 二 for counting and in numbers like 二十.

In Chinese, 两 and 二 both mean 'two', but they are used in different contexts. 两 is used before measure words (e.g., 两个, 两天) and in some fixed expressions. 二 is used when counting (一, 二, 三), in phone numbers, and in compound numbers like 二十 (20) or 十二 (12). A common mistake is to say 二个人 instead of 两个人.
ContextUse 两Use 二
Before measure words两个人 (two people)二个人 (incorrect)
Counting numbers一, 两, 三 (incorrect)一, 二, 三 (correct)
Numbers 10-99二十 (incorrect)二十 (correct)
Telling time (o'clock)两点 (two o'clock)二点 (incorrect)

What is the difference between 两 and 俩?

俩 means 'two people' and already includes the measure word 个, so you don't add 个 after it.

俩 (liǎ) is a contraction of 两个, meaning 'two people'. It is used only for people and cannot be followed by a measure word. For example, 我们俩 means 'the two of us', but you cannot say 我们俩个人. In contrast, 两 is a general number that requires a measure word, as in 两个人.
Usage两俩
Meaningtwo (general)two people (contraction of 两个)
With measure word两个人 (correct)俩个人 (incorrect)
Example两个苹果 (two apples)我们俩 (the two of us)
