看 kàn, kān

A hand over an eye — that's the picture behind 看.

The top part comes from 手 (hand), flattened. The bottom is 目 (eye). Imagine a hand raised above your eyes to block glare and see far. That gesture of looking is 看.

What's the difference between 看 and 看见?

看 is the action of looking; 看见 is the result of actually seeing.

Classic pair我看了,但是没看见。 (I looked, but didn't see anything.)我看见了,但是没看。 (I saw, but didn't look.)

Can 看 mean 'visit' someone?

Yes: 看朋友 means visit a friend, not just look at them.

kān means watch over or look after; kàn means look, read, or watch.

Guard/watch over看家 (kān jiā, watch the house)看家 (kàn jiā, look at the house)
