道 dào

道 stacks a head over a walking foot: a guide leading the way down a path.

The old form puts a head (首) above a walking stroke (辶). Picture a guide's head leading the steps along a road. That picture gives 道 its core meaning: a way, a road. The same 道 sits inside 知道, which started life as 'know the way.'

首 head 辶 walking / movement

Common Usage & Traps

  • 知道 (zhīdào) — to know (a fact)
  • 说道 说

说道 belongs to novel narration. Real people say 他说, not 他说道.

  • 我知道他 (about a friend you've met) 我认识他

知道 only says you've heard of him. 认识 means you've actually met.

What's the real difference between 知道 and 认识?

知道 is for facts. 认识 is for people you've met and characters you can read.

Use 知道 for information you've learned: 我知道他姓高. Use 认识 when you've actually met someone: 我认识他. So 我认识他姓高 sounds broken — you can't meet a fact. 认识 also handles reading: 这个字我不认识 means you can't read that character. And 我知道他 usually just means you've heard of him, not that you're friends.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Facts我知道他姓高。我认识他姓高。
People you've met我认识他,我们一起吃过饭。我知道他。(only means you've heard of him)
Reading characters这个字我不认识。这个字我不知道。(means you don't know about it)

Why do people answer 知道了 instead of just 知道?

了 turns 知道 from a plain fact into 'okay, got it, message received.'

我知道 is a statement about what's already in your head. 知道了 is an answer — it means 'okay, I've taken that in.' Your boss hands you a task, you reply 知道了, not 知道. Firing back plain 知道 can sound curt, like you're brushing the person off. Same pattern with 好 and 好了.

Answering new information知道了。知道。(sounds curt)
Stating what you already know我知道他姓高。我知道了他姓高。(sounds like you just found out)

So is 道 the word you use for 'road' in everyday speech?

People say 路 for a road. 道 mostly survives inside fixed words like 知道.

Dictionaries hand you 道 = road, but daily talk runs on 路: 这条路很长, 过马路. 道 normally shows up inside whole words — 知道, 味道, 一道 — where you can't pull it out and use it alone. It still means road in set phrases and names like 大道, so the dictionary isn't lying, just dated.

Talking about a road这条路很远。这条道很远。(sounds like a lane name)
Saying you know我知道。我道。
