Common Usage & Traps

  • 因为下雨,所以没去 (yīnwèi xiàyǔ, suǒyǐ méi qù) — Because it rained, (I) didn't go.
  • 因为太贵,所以没买 (yīnwèi tài guì, suǒyǐ méi mǎi) — Because it was too expensive, (I) didn't buy it.
  • 因为堵车,所以迟到了 (yīnwèi dǔchē, suǒyǐ chídào le) — Because there was a traffic jam, (I) was late.
  • 因为他不舒服,所以请假了 (yīnwèi tā bù shūfu, suǒyǐ qǐngjià le) — Because he didn't feel well, he asked for leave.
  • 我不去,因为下雨 (wǒ bú qù, yīnwèi xiàyǔ) — I'm not going because it's raining.
  • 因为喜欢,所以买了 (yīnwèi xǐhuan, suǒyǐ mǎi le) — Because (I) liked it, (I) bought it.

The reason and result are flipped. Rain is the reason; your not going is the result. 因为 marks the reason, 所以 marks the result.

Do you always need 所以 after 因为?

No. 所以 is common, but 因为 can stand alone in short answers and casual speech.

Textbooks drill 因为...所以... as a matching pair. Real Chinese often drops 所以 when the result is obvious. In longer written sentences, adding 所以 makes the cause-result link clearer. A bare 因为 answer is normal, especially when someone asks why.

“B:因为我不喜欢运动,所以这两个我都不喜欢。” (B: Because I don't like sports, I don't like either of these.)

Long answer

Can 因为 come after the result, like '我不去,因为下雨'?

Yes. Chinese lets you state the result first, then add the reason with 因为.

Both orders are natural. '因为下雨,我不去' leads with the reason. '我不去,因为下雨' leads with the decision and explains it. The second order often sounds like an answer to 'Why not?' or an afterthought.

Explaining a choice

When someone asks 为什么, do you answer with 因为 or 所以?

Use 因为 to give the reason. 所以 starts the result, not the answer to 为什么.

为什么 asks for a cause. 因为 answers that cause directly. 所以 means 'so' or 'therefore', so it introduces the consequence. If you answer 为什么 with 所以, you sound like you are giving a result, not a reason.

Giving result
