女孩儿

Common Usage & Traps

  • 小女孩儿 (xiǎo nǚháir) — little girl
  • 一个女孩儿 (yí gè nǚháir) — a girl
  • 那个女孩儿 (nà gè nǚháir) — that girl
  • 漂亮的女孩儿 (piàoliang de nǚháir) — pretty girl
  • 她是我女孩儿 她是我女朋友 / 她是我女儿

女孩儿 means a girl, not a girlfriend or daughter. English 'my girl' can mean both, but Chinese uses 女朋友 or 女儿.

Is the 儿 in 女孩儿 pronounced as a separate syllable?

No. 女孩儿 is said nǚháir, with 儿 blended into 孩.

女孩儿 uses the northern 儿 ending, so the 儿 blends into 孩. The whole word sounds like nǚháir, not nǚ hái ér. Compare 女儿: there the 儿 is a full separate syllable, nǚ'ér. Beginners who say nǚ hái ér sound stiff and over-pronounced.

Should I say 女孩儿 or 女孩子?

Both mean girl; 女孩儿 is northern and erhua, while 女孩子 is more neutral nationwide.

女孩儿 is common in northern speech and sounds casual. 女孩子 is more neutral across China and Taiwan. 女孩子 can also sound softer or refer to a young woman. In writing, plain 女孩 is a clean choice without the 儿 sound.

Northern speech女孩儿女孩子 (less local flavor)
Taiwan/standard女孩子女孩儿 (less common)
Formal writing女孩女孩儿 (too casual)

Why does Chinese say 那个女孩儿,她是谁?

Chinese often puts the topic first, then uses a pronoun to ask about it.

那个女孩儿 is the topic, and 她是谁? is the comment about it. The pronoun 她 points back to the topic, so it is not redundant. You can also drop 她 and say 那个女孩儿是谁? Both are correct, but the version with 她 sounds more conversational. “那个女孩儿,她是谁?” (That girl — who is she?) ── [《我的家人(2)》](/read/my-family-members#s7)

Can you call an adult woman 女孩儿?

Often yes for young women, but it can sound cute or condescending depending on age and tone.

女孩儿 literally means girl, but everyday speech stretches it to young women. A 20-something woman can be called 女孩儿 without offense. For a woman in her 40s or older, use 女士 or 姐/大姐 instead. Tone and context matter more than age alone.

Older woman女士 / 大姐女孩儿 (can sound patronizing)
