hái

Origin & Mnemonic:

A baby’s first laugh or an infant’s smile. A child, kid, or children in general. Child radical 子 paired with pig 亥, which supplies the sound “hái.”

孩 = 子 (baby) + 亥 (sound-alike tag). No hidden pig, no poetry.

The left side 子 is a drawing of a baby with its arms out, and it carries the meaning 'child'. The right side 亥 is there purely for the sound — 亥 (hài) and 孩 (hái) come out almost identical. Meaning on the left, pronunciation on the right. That's the whole build.

child / baby (gives 孩 its meaning) sound hint, pronounced hài (gives 孩 its sound)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 孩子 (háizi) — child / kid (neutral, safe everywhere)
  • 小孩儿 (xiǎoháir) — kid (warm, very common in northern speech)
  • 男孩子 (nánháizi) — boy (casual, spoken)
  • 女孩子 (nǚháizi) — girl (casual, spoken)
  • 小孩子 (xiǎoháizi) — little kid
  • 一个孩 一个孩子 / 一个小孩儿

Bare 孩 never stands alone in modern Mandarin. Natives wait for the missing 子.

  • 孩们 孩子们

们 attaches to the full word 孩子, not to the bare character 孩.

Can you just say 孩 for 'child' in everyday Chinese?

No. A bare 孩 sounds cut off mid-breath — you need 孩子 or 小孩儿.

Say 孩 alone and people wait for you to finish the word. It behaves like '-let' in English: you can't say 'let' by itself and mean a small book. 孩子 is your neutral, safe pick every time. 小孩儿 is warmer and far more common in northern speech, especially Beijing. Say 一个孩 and listeners will mentally glue 子 on for you and assume that's what you meant.

Is 男孩 the same as 男孩子?

Both work — the 子 version just sounds more casual and spoken.

男孩 and 女孩 are perfectly normal in speech and in writing. Adding 子 — 男孩子, 女孩子 — makes it sound a bit more casual and down-to-earth, like 'boy' versus 'little guy'. Neither is wrong, so just match the moment. For an essay or a news piece, 男孩 is cleaner. Chatting about your neighbor's kid, 男孩子 feels more natural.

Written / neutral男孩 / 女孩男孩子 (too chatty on paper)

Do you say 一个孩子 or 一位孩子?

Say 一个孩子. 位 is respectful — it's for adults you want to honor.

个 is the default counter for people when you're not being formal. 位 adds politeness, which is why you hear 一位老师 or 一位客人. Using 位 on a kid sounds oddly ceremonial, like calling a toddler 'Sir'. Stick with 个 for children. You can still say 一个小孩子 when you want it cute, but 个 is the one doing the work.

Honored adult一位老师 / 一位客人一个老师 (less polite)
Cute kid一个小孩子一位小孩子
