读书

dú shū v.

to read a book; to study; to attend school

Common Usage & Traps

  • 读书 (dú shū) — to read (in general); to study, to be a student
  • 爱读书 (ài dú shū) — to love reading
  • 读书一小时 (dú shū yī xiǎoshí) — to read for an hour
  • 读一本书 (dú yī běn shū) — to read one specific book
  • 在大学读书 (zài dàxué dú shū) — to study at a university
  • 我在读书一本书。 我在读一本书。

读书 already has 书 baked inside it, so a second object has nowhere to go. Add a real title or a specific book and you drop 书: 我在读一本书.

  • 他在北大看书。 他在北大读书。

看书 only means eyes on text. If the point is that he is a student there, the word is 读书.

Why does 读书 mean both 'read a book' and 'go to school'?

读书 covers two jobs: reading books, and being a student.

On its own, 读书 means the activity of reading, the same way English says 'reading'. But it also does a second job that English hands to separate words like 'study' or 'enroll'. So 他在北大读书 means he is a student at Peking University, not that he is holding a book there. Context decides, and school talk tends to win whenever a school or city sits in front of it. Asking 你在哪儿读书 is the normal way to ask someone where they study.

DimensionNaturalAvoid
Talking about school他在北大读书。他在北大看书。
Reading as a hobby我睡前爱读书。我睡前爱看书 for serious study
Asking where someone studies你在哪儿读书?你在哪儿看书?

What's the real difference between 读书 and 看书?

看书 is eyes on any text; 读书 means serious study or reading out loud.

看书 is the neutral one: eyes on pages, phone screen, menu, anything with words on it. 读书 leans heavier and suggests reading aloud, reciting, or studying something properly. A student reading a textbook out loud in class is 读书. Someone skimming a comic on the subway is 看书. When you are stuck, 看书 is the safer default for casual reading.

DimensionNaturalAvoid
Casual reading on the couch我在看书。我在读书。
Reading aloud in class同学们在读书。同学们在看书。
Studying, close to graduating他在读书,明年毕业。他在看书,明年毕业。

Can I name the exact book after 读书, like 我在读书《哈利波特》?

No. 读书 already has 书 inside it, so a title needs plain 读.

读书 is a package deal, with the object 书 baked right into the word. That means you cannot bolt a second object onto it, whether that object is a title or one specific book. 我在读书《哈利波特》 sounds like 'I read-books Harry Potter.' Naming the book means dropping 书 and putting 读 straight in front of the title.

DimensionNaturalAvoid
Naming a title我在读《哈利波特》。我在读书《哈利波特》。
General habit, no title我睡前读书。我睡前读书一本小说。

Why is it 读书一小时 with no word for 'for', and can the hour go somewhere else?

Chinese has no 'for' — the hour just parks itself after the verb.

Duration phrases in Chinese skip the word 'for' entirely; the length simply follows the verb. So 读书一小时 is a complete, natural sentence with nothing missing. You can also split 读书 and park the hour inside it as 读一个小时的书. Both work in daily speech, though the split version sounds slightly more careful or written. “工作两三年, 休息四五天, 读书一小时, 吃饭五分钟。” (Work for two or three years, rest for four or five days, read for an hour, eat for five minutes.) ── [《一二三(2)》](/read/counting-days-rhymes#s6)

Reading for an hour我读书一小时。我为了一个小时读书。
Same pattern, other activity我吃饭五分钟。我为了五分钟吃饭。
Splitting the word我读一个小时的书。我读一个小时书 the title.
