Origin & Mnemonic:

  • 读书 (dú shū) — to read; to study

    Chinese verb-object order puts the verb first. 书读 reverses the natural order and sounds wrong.

  • 看字 看书

    For reading a book, the natural HSK 1 verb is 看 or 读 with 书. 看字 is not a standard beginner collocation.
