Stand at a door and picture the movement. If someone moves out toward you, use 出来. If someone leaves away from you, use 出去. English just says 'out,' so it hides the direction. That is why 你出来一下 calls someone to you, but 他出去了 means he left.

出来 also means a product or news 'comes out' to the public.
