The Dual-Screen Split: Running two parallel actions at the exact same beat.

You must place 一边 before each verb to show multitasking: 一边听音乐一边看书, never leaving one half off.

Common Usage & Traps

Do I need 一边 before both verbs, or does one cover the whole sentence?

One 一边 is never enough — Chinese hangs the tag on both verbs.

一边...一边... is a frame with two hooks, so the second 一边 cannot be skipped. English "while" shows up once, which tricks learners into dropping the second tag. Without it, the second verb just hangs in the air and natives wait for the missing piece. Think of it like a pair of chopsticks — one stick alone picks up nothing. 我一边吃饭看电视 sounds cut off; 我一边吃饭,一边看电视 closes the frame.

Two actions at onceSubj + 一边 + Verb 1 + 一边 + Verb 2我一边吃饭,一边看电视。我一边吃饭,看电视。
Three actions at once一边 + Verb 1 + 一边 + Verb 2 + 一边 + Verb 3她一边走路,一边打电话,一边吃包子。她一边走路,打电话,吃包子。
Only one action going onJust use the plain verb我在吃饭,你先吃吧。我一边吃饭。

Why does dropping 了 into one half of 一边...一边... make the sentence sound wrong?

Both halves are still in motion, so 了 has no place to land.

了 stamps something as finished, but both halves of 一边...一边... are still moving. That is why 昨天我一边跑步,一边听歌 works — past time is fine, finished is not. The second you add 了, one side reads as a done deal and the sentence turns into a sequence. If one action truly ended first, split it: 我吃完饭再看电视. Same rule as 了 marking a completed action.

Two live actions in the past昨天 + 一边 + Verb 1 + 一边 + Verb 2昨天我一边跑步,一边听歌。昨天我一边跑步,一边听了歌。
One action actually finished firstVerb 1 + 完 + 再 + Verb 2我吃完饭再看电视。我一边吃完饭,一边看电视。
Someone left while you were busyAction 的时候,someone + Verb + 了我看电视的时候,他出门了。我一边看电视,一边出门了。

Can 又...又... take the place of 一边...一边... for two things happening at once?

又...又... stacks labels on a thing; 一边...一边... runs live actions.

又...又... sticks two labels on one thing — what it is. 一边...一边... runs two actions side by side — what someone is doing. So 这家茶馆又安静又便宜 describes the place, while 他一边喝茶,一边看表演 describes the person. Swap 又...又... into the teahouse line and you turn a night out into a weird building that is made of tea and shows. Actions go with 一边...一边...; traits and states go with 又...又....

Why do people say 边吃边聊 instead of 一边吃,一边聊?

Natives drop the 一 in fast speech — same frame, just snappier.

In casual talk, 一边...一边... often shrinks to 边...边..., especially with short everyday verbs. 边走边吃、边听边点头 — the 一 quietly vanishes and nobody hears a thing missing. The meaning does not change, so learn both forms instead of picking a favorite. Keep the full 一边...一边... for writing and formal speech; 边...边... is for chatting with friends and texting.

Chatting with a friend边 + Verb 1 + 边 + Verb 2咱们边走边说。咱们边走,边说。
