了1

HSK-G-62
HSK 1 动作的态
Camera Formula [Person] + [Verb] + 了 + [Result / Finished Item]

The Shipping Box Stamp: 了1 is like a rubber stamp on a shipping box. Once stamped, the action is finished, sealed, and ready to go.

Chinese verbs do not have past-tense endings like '-ed' in English. Instead, when you finish a specific action, you glue 了1 right behind the verb (做好了, 吃了) to tell the listener: 'This job is done!'

Common Usage & Traps

  • 做好了 (zuò hǎo le) — finished cooking / ready to serve
  • 吃了面条 (chī le miàntiáo) — ate the noodles (action finished)
  • 洗了手 (xǐ le shǒu) — washed hands
  • 我天天吃了早饭(讲日常习惯时) 我天天吃早饭

Never use 了1 for everyday habits! Habits are ongoing routines, not a single finished job.

  • 我昨天不吃了晚饭 我昨天没吃晚饭

When an action did not happen in the past, drop 了 and use 没/没有.

Does 了1 mean "past tense"? Why can't I use it for daily habits like "我天天吃了早饭"?

No! Chinese has zero past tense. 了1 only marks a completed action (a done deal), never general habits.

In English, anything that happened yesterday gets past tense ('I worked', 'I ate'). But in Chinese, 了1 is an action stamp. If you do something repeatedly every day as a routine (天天吃, 天天去), the story is not closed or finished—it is your ongoing life habit! Therefore, 了1 is forbidden in habit sentences.
What You MeanNatural ChineseLearner Mistake to Avoid
I eat breakfast every day (Habit)我天天吃早饭。✗ 我天天吃了早饭。
I finished eating breakfast (Done deal)我吃了早饭。✓ Natural completed action
He cooked noodles for me (Done deal)他给我做好了面条。✓ Natural completed action

Why does 了1 sit right after the verb instead of at the end of the sentence?

Because 了1 stamps the action itself! Placing it after the verb proves the action reached its finish line.

When you say '吃了热热的面条', 了 hugs the verb 吃. It tells the listener right away that the eating action took place, before you even describe what was in the bowl.
