和2

HSK 1 词类 连词

Can you say 我一起去和你 instead of 我和你一起去?

和 must go between the two people, before the verb.

和 is a connector, not a verb. It glues two people together before the action. English puts 'with' after the verb, but Chinese puts 和 right between the two subjects. So 我和你一起去 is natural. 我一起去和你 sounds like you forgot how to build a sentence. Formula: Person A + 和 + Person B + Verb.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Two people doing something togetherA + 和 + B + Verb我和你一起去。我一起去和你。

Why does 我喜欢咖啡和茶 sound fine, but 我喜欢喝咖啡和喜欢喝茶 sounds like a robot?

和 links nouns, not repeated actions with the same subject.

和 only links words or short phrases, usually nouns. It doesn't link two full actions that share the same subject. If you say 我喜欢喝咖啡和喜欢喝茶, you're repeating 喜欢 and using 和 like an English 'and' between two actions. That's a robot translation. Instead, just list the objects: 我喜欢喝咖啡和茶. Or use 也: 我喜欢喝咖啡,也喜欢喝茶.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Two objects of the same verbVerb + Noun1 + 和 + Noun2我喜欢咖啡和茶。我喜欢咖啡和喜欢茶。
Two actions with same subjectVerb + Noun1 + 和 + Noun2我喜欢喝咖啡和茶。我喜欢喝咖啡和喜欢喝茶。
Two actions (emphasized separately)Clause 1, 也 + Clause 2我喜欢喝咖啡,也喜欢喝茶。我喜欢喝咖啡和喜欢喝茶。

Can I use 和 to connect two whole sentences, like 我吃饭和你看书?

和 cannot join two complete sentences; use a comma or other words.

和 is a small connector. It can join words or short phrases, but it cannot join two complete sentences. Each sentence has its own subject and verb, so you need a comma or a different word. 我吃饭和你看书 is a classic English-to-Chinese mistake. Say 我吃饭,你看书, or 我吃饭,你也看书.

Situation / PatternFormulaNaturalAvoid
Two actions with different subjectsClause 1, Clause 2我吃饭,你看书。我吃饭和你看书。
Two actions with same subjectClause 1, 也 + Clause 2我吃饭,也看书。我吃饭和看书。
