最 zuì

To seize an offender or take something by force.

To be the most, -est, or extremely; a superlative marker for "top". Take (取) the sun (日) at the very top—the supreme spot among all.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 最好 (zuì hǎo) — best; had better
  • 最多 (zuì duō) — at most
  • 最少 (zuì shǎo) — at least
  • 最后 (zuì hòu) — last; finally
  • 最近 (zuì jìn) — recently; lately
  • 最漂亮 (zuì piào liang) — most beautiful
  • 最喜欢 (zuì xǐ huan) — like the most
  • 喜欢最 最喜欢

English speakers may place '最' after the verb, but in Chinese it must come before the adjective or verb it modifies.

  • 最很漂亮 最漂亮

Do not combine '最' with '很'; '最' already expresses a superlative degree, so '很' is redundant.

Where should '最' be placed in a Chinese sentence?

'最' always comes before the adjective or verb it modifies, never after.

In Chinese, '最' functions as an helper word meaning 'most' and must precede the word it modifies. For example, '最好' (best), '最喜欢' (like most). Placing it after the verb, as in English 'like most', is incorrect.

Position最 + adjective/verbadjective/verb + 最
Example我最喜欢这本书。我喜欢这本书最。

Can '最' and '很' be used together?

No, '最' and '很' cannot be used together because they both indicate degree and are redundant.

'最' means 'most' (superlative), while '很' means 'very' (positive degree). Combining them, as in '最很好', is grammatically incorrect. Use either '最' or '很', but not both.
