月 yuè

HSK 1 Writing L2

月 is a drawing of a crescent moon.

Ancient people drew 月 as a thin crescent with a small line inside to mark the moon's surface. It squared off over the centuries into the shape you see today, but the moon idea stuck. Since early humans told time by watching the moon, 月 also means 'month' — as in 一月 (January) and 一个月 (one month).

Common Usage & Traps

  • 一个月 (yí ge yuè) — one month (a length of time)
  • 一月 (yī yuè) — January
  • 几月 (jǐ yuè) — which month
  • 上个月 (shàng ge yuè) — last month
  • 我学中文一月了 我学中文一个月了

一月 means January, not 'one month.' For a length of time you add 个.

  • 下月 下个月

下月 sounds like a label on a printed calendar. Everyday speech says 下个月.

Why do people say 一个月 but not 一月 when they mean 'one month'?

一月 is January. 一个月 is a length of one month.

一月 names a month on the calendar, so it means January, not 'one month.' When you count how long something lasts, you add 个 in front: 一个月, 两个月, 三个月. So 我学中文一个月了 means 'I've studied Chinese for a month.' Say 我学中文一月了 and natives hear 'I've studied Chinese January-ed.'

A calendar month一月很冷一个月很冷

If you point at the sky tonight, do you say 看,月 or 看,月亮?

The moon in the sky is 月亮. 月 alone sounds like a calendar word.

The glowing thing in the sky is 月亮 in everyday speech. 月 by itself is saved for dates and lengths of time, so it sounds off when you mean the moon. Point up and say 看,月, and you sound like you're reciting an old poem. Go with 看,月亮!
