五 wǔ

HSK 1 Writing L2

A central crossing of yin and yang between heaven and earth.

The number five (5). Top line is sky, bottom line is earth, and the strokes cross in the middle.

Common Usage & Traps

  • 五块 (wǔ kuài) — five yuan
  • 五个 (wǔ gè) — five of something
  • 五岁 (wǔ suì) — five years old
  • 五月 (wǔ yuè) — May

Age never takes 是. The number plus 岁 already says everything.

Money counts with 块, never 个. Here 块 means the same as 元.

五月 is the calendar month May. Counting how many months needs 个月.

For 'I am five years old', do you say 我是五岁 or 我五岁?

Say 我五岁. Adding 是 makes you sound like a translation robot.

Age statements skip the 'to be' verb completely. The number plus 岁 carries the whole meaning on its own. 我是五岁 is understandable, but it sounds like you translated English one word at a time. Every age follows this same pattern: 他二十岁, 我妈五十岁, 你几岁?

Stating your age
Anyone else's age
Asking a question

Why is 'five yuan' 五块 but 'five people' 五个人?

五块 is money. 五个 counts everything else. Swapping them sounds wrong.

五块 handles money only: 五块钱 means five yuan. Counting people or things takes 个 instead, as in 五个人 and 五个苹果. Mix them up and the sentence still parses, but it sounds like a foreigner guessing. It is such a fixed chunk that it works as a story title: 五块钱 ── 《五块钱》.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Money
Fruit or objects

Why is May 五月 but five months 五个月?

五月 is the month of May. Five months as a length of time is 五个月.

Calendar months are just a number plus 月, so 五月 is May. When you mean how long something lasts, you add 个: 五个月 is five months. English blurs those two ideas together, which is why learners mix them up. (I started in May) with 我学中文五个月了 (I have studied for five months).
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Calendar month五月 (May)五个月 (for May)
Length of time五个月 (five months)五月 (for five months)
Real sentence
