去 qù

HSK 1 Writing L2

Ancient form: a person (大) moving away from a pit or dwelling (凵) — leaving.

That old picture gave 去 its core meaning: leave or go away from where you are. Modern 去 still means 'go'.

大 person (ancient form) 凵 pit or dwelling (ancient form)

Common Usage & Traps

  • 去学校 (qù xuéxiào) — go to school
  • 去中国 (qù Zhōngguó) — go to China
  • 去北京 (qù Běijīng) — go to Beijing
  • 去商店 (qù shāngdiàn) — go to the shop
  • 去饭店 (qù fàndiàn) — go to the restaurant
  • 我去 (wǒ qù) — I'm going / I'll go
  • 我去中国用飞机 我坐飞机去中国

Put the vehicle before 去, not after the destination.

  • 我去家 我回家

回家 is the fixed phrase for going home; 去家 sounds like going to a house, not your home.

  • 我去在学校 我去学校

去 already means go to; don't add 在 before the place.

Why does 我去你那儿 mean 'I'm coming to your place'?

去 vs 来 depends on the speaker's location, not English 'go' vs 'come'.

English uses 'come' when the listener is at the destination. Chinese uses 去 when you move away from where you are now. Use 来 when someone moves toward the speaker. So 我去你那儿 is right if you are not at your friend's place.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
You go to friend's place我去你那儿我来你那儿
Friend comes to your place你来我这儿你去我这儿
You are at school, telling friend你来学校你去学校

Can I say 我去学校 without adding 'to' before the place?

去 already includes 'go to'. Don't add 在 before the place.

去 already contains the idea of 'go to' a place. You don't add 在 or any other word before the destination. Say 我去学校, not 我去在学校. The place simply follows 去.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Going to school我去学校我去在学校
Going to China我去中国我去在中国
Going to the shop我去商店我去在商店

Can I say 我去饭店吃饭 to mean 'I go to a restaurant to eat'?

Yes. 去 + place + verb is normal for going somewhere to do something.

This is the go-somewhere-to-do-something pattern: 去 + place + action verb. The place comes after 去, and the action comes last. “晚上,大中去公司前边的一个小饭店吃饭。” (In the evening, Dazhong goes to a small restaurant to eat.) ── 《五块钱》
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Go to restaurant to eat我去饭店吃饭我去饭店和吃饭
Go to shop to buy things我去商店买东西我去商店和买东西
Go to China to study我去中国学习我去中国和学习

Does 去 already mean 'went' in the past?

去 doesn't mark past by itself. Add 了 or a time word for clear past.

去 is neutral. 我去中国 can be present, future, or general. For clear past, add 了 or a time word like 昨天. 我昨天去中国了 means I went to China yesterday. Don't add 了 to future plans or wishes.
DimensionNaturalAvoid
Future我明天去中国我明天去了中国
Past我昨天去中国了我昨天去中国
Want to go我想去中国我想去了中国
